Dogs That Don't Make The Grade Or Jack.

Recommended Posts

dogs are like humans some are clever some are stupid .if you used a dog on deer preban some of them would not chase rabitts not because they were jackers but because they wanted easier to catch bigger stuff .some wont chase foxes not because they are jackers they logicaly think why get bit and injured by a inedible object ? .some will chase a hare turn it a couple of times and stop .not because they were jackers . then the next hare they would run ragged .the dog by exspireince knows which hare is more likely to be caught .if a wolf was out hunting would he wastse his time and energy chaseing a jack rabitt or would he rather chase a deer .some dogs especially lurcher to lurcher are not kept fit by some owners and jack because they are unfit and knackerd or they are badly bred with no stamina .if you have a dog jack on you .when previously it did not i would check the dog for injuries as that is sometimes the cause or over working the dog .some owners run thier dogs ragged and wonder why they jack

Take a good look at themselfs firstly.

You said it yourself. . . . . .   "you know lads that go through loads of dogs"   Now isn't it funny that the type of lads that often seem to get 'jackers'. . . . . . seem to get loads of them?

dogs which simply cant or wont work in any way are few and far between. i expect my dogs to learn a lot of different skills (ferretting, hunting up, bit of lamping, gun work, trailing shot deer etc) a

That's all fair and well gsdxg but iv seen dogs refuse to run/commit to a course that was uncatchable in the mutts mind, only for another mutt to run and catch the uncatchable quarry.... Brains or not, lurchers are running dogs and if I slip or tell my mutts to get on then I expect them to do it, after all I feed and care for the said mutt.....

My saluki x whippet was going really well from a young age then out if no where he would just watch stuff run off in the lamp and even ran home one night but he loved ferreting so I gave him to a bloke as company and for a dog he could take ferreting but long story short the dog wouldn't settle so I had him back and thought if give him 1 last chance before I pts because he was such a nice dog and I knew what he was capable of, I went back to basics and he has just had one hell of a season an I am so glad I stuck with him, I think it was more my fault rather than the dogs, but he is flying now on everything, so when a dog does jack maybe we should look at the bigger picture first before we make any rash desisions, he has taught me a big lesson

Atb

at least your honest enough to admit it was your fault  we bit of extra time and effort and commitment never goes wrong

Some good replies. .definitely a lot down to the owner and entering. .we all make mistakes but it's when you don't learn from them maybe time to find a new hobby lol. Like ideation says ..same folk going through many failed dogs. .bad luck or bad handling? Atb sesku

Most dogs given the right handling and enough game put infront of them will do the job ! Alot has got to do with entering at the right time and understanding when the dog is ready for certain quarry

You cannot train a dog to take what it dosnt want to take simple as.

In my expierance GOOD pet homes where a dog will be kept active are few and far bettween, even when you find them a skinny mongral with great big long legs are normally way down the list.

Pts

If you have a dog that jacks you either stick by it, find it a pet home or a home doing something it can do. Dogs should never be put to sleep cos they cant do something. People who put a dog to sleep for not making the grade or whatever want a bullet themselves.

Yep my bad was having a mushroom moment

thats exactly why the rescue shelters are full of abandoned dogs because most people don't do the right thing and get rid of the dog instead of culling the shite. Look at nature quitters get eaten alive, survival of the fittest not the weak jacking type.
