man o kent 269
Anyone used a staffie as a rabbit dog, and how did they turn out? Quote Link to post

man o kent 269
Not when there in a net Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,196
Why not? If you get them broken to ferrets. Only problem is the lack of coat, shivering dogs on a cold day winds me up . 2 Quote Link to post
The one 8,503
Any dog you can break to ferrets could be taught to mark etc in reality they just wouldn't be fast enough to scoop up any rabbits that slipped the nets Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
I knew someone who used to use a staffie for ferreting rats (among other things) - she was fantastic at it. Once saw 3 rats bolt into a tight space in quick succession from under a pile of crap followed shorlty by the fert. Staffie was snatching and shaking left right and centre with the fert right in the thick of it. Dog completely ignored fert even though it was only a few inches away from one of the rats. Doesn't answer your question about rabbits though - I don't know if he ever used her for that. But she worked fantastically well in a team with ferrets. Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,205
If you get an intelligent one and you put in the time you can train them to do anything Mine had a good ability to know where the missed/difficult holes were and would wait nearby, she had a healthy respect for the ferrets and would not touch netted rabbits Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,347
Theres one on you tube. Not sure how to put link up seems to do ok on bankings but think I'd rather use a lurcher made for the job. Staffs a bit hard mouthed Quote Link to post
pie-eater 377
My staff retrieved a grey squirrel Id shot one day and it was mashed so maybe to hard mouthed as said above. As a marking dog I don't see why not. Theyre all different though so I suppose some would be ok. Quote Link to post
