socks 32,253
Defo go for a pup mate outa the best breeding you can put your hands on even if you have to pay for it be worth it in the end. If you have the room maybe take two in they rare each other up. If you plan to go lamping just give the dog an extra handfull the night before you go wudnt give them anything that day it would just lie heavy in ther gut. A dog has the fastest digestive system of all mammals and can completely digest a meal in 8 hours so feed the dog 8 hours before you intend to work it and it will be ready to go on a full session for you ...... 2 Quote Link to post
Irishman 117
thanks irishman ill look into getting two as ive plenty of room would you feed the dog when u come home from lamping or wait till the next night as usual Socks is right if you want to be exact but i feed them extra the night before and giv them a good feed when they get back works well for me. I have there dish made before i go lamping then just put a drop of warm water over there grub when i get back "simples" LOL Quote Link to post
Ads 39
Hi mate, got to agree with everyone else. I was in your position just over a year ago and although I've had dogs before I decided to get a Lurcher that was a bit older and already trained. I've now got two and basically, ones right and the other has "issues" so I'm now looking to go down the route of a puppy and bringing it on myself with the one that's ok. People just don't get rid of good dogs! Get a puppy mate, I think most of it is common sense and if your stuck with anything, there's always THL Quote Link to post
BROCK DOG 126
Go for a pup mate and bring it up bond with it and you both learn together Quote Link to post

beast 1,884
i agree, two pups is a nightmare for anyone, unless you are home all day long and can take them each out separately for a good amount of time. i think if somebody new to the game got two pups it would be even harder and they probably would be out of the lurcher game before too long. im not sure that dogs want to be "raring up" to chase anyway, obviously they should be keen and excited but not in a wild hyper state of mind Quote Link to post
Irishman 117
My dogs dont need food before they go hunting they get fed at night when they finished method used by most good doggy men i know Quote Link to post

andy97 209
in all honesty all depends what ou want to do if you want a pass on dog to work just for the season get one thats already doing its job if you want something to keep get a pup n fetch it on yourself Quote Link to post
keepitcovert 842
Right mate so you say your new to the game, my advice would be to get one pup, to train two at the same time takes experience and loads of patience, bond with the dog and dont rush it do your homework, and take the time and effort to train it properly starting with the basic commands, then retreiveing, and then the more advanched training. long haul ahead, but worth it if you want a proper lurcher not just a slip and kill running dog. 2 Quote Link to post
