Mole man Kent 26
Northern lad I'm sorry mate, but you obvs aint got a scooby about ferreting. If you don't feed em they're guna kill and stay down for a long time. The amount of time I've heard people say starve em before you go, for a start they will have no energy to work. It can take a while to get some ferrets working and some tend to get better over time. Get used to going into holes (I.e plastic ducting to start off), if you can get em used to the smell of a bunny, pull a Caracas down a pipe get em interested. Just keep trying mate see what happens. To start with you want to put em into a bury with a lot of rabbits. 1 Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
Dont agree with that ive been ferreting 45 years sometimes I feed before i go out, but sometimes i don't, and it makes no difference work wise, they will kill fed or not, and they come out, I feed usually at 4pm and when not fed in the morning my Jills will work a bury bolting rabbits, and if they kill below, and for some reason cant dig to the rabbit, they come out, they dont lie up. 3 Quote Link to post
Mole man Kent 26
He said don't feed them for a couple of days, I totally disagree. I don't alway feed mine before I go. That's like you not having food for a few days then going and having a hard days graft! Your going to be f****d! Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
ask the good dog men if they feed there dogs before a good nights lamping you know what the answer will be no. But that's due to digestion as opposed to prey drive? I don't like to take a hungry dog lamping. Recipe for disaster if running them hard. I always make sure I've fed my bitch about 8 hours before. I don't think feeding makes any difference to ferrets though. As said, a good worker will kill a stubborn rabbit wether it's hungry or not. 1 Quote Link to post

Mole man Kent 26
Fair enough lads, my oringal comment came across wrong, yes they will kill wether they're hungry or not! I like a ferret that sticks with a rabbit! My main point was, not feeding a ferret for a few days before working em means a lack of energy. Who would want to do a hard days work without a belly full of grub. 2 Quote Link to post
nighthunter. 13
yes your right there mate not a few days that's starving them for sure, I just leave mine a day before I go is all, but some feed everyone two there own I guess I just think personallyi like mine keen and hungry not hungry in starving hungry two work but your right there you don't leave them days never cruelty that is atb Quote Link to post
foxtails 272
Give them away as pets, and get into some good working stock, the ferreting Season is about over, so there will be a few good kits being bred. AGREE ! Quote Link to post
GreyRake 108
I did starve the young jill a night before a hunt, she wasn't making much effort prior but did that day. It was a one off to get her going. Not needed otherwise. Quote Link to post
fatlad 250
ask the good dog men if they feed there dogs before a good nights lamping you know what the answer will be no. you obviously don't know any good dog men then, as for the ferrets some just wont have work in them I once bought some kits off a ferret that had only been worked one season and was bred from pets they just wouldn't work at all. Its a sad state of affairs that people breeding for pets are ruining ferrets as workers when I was at school you could buy a kitt most summers as they were all bred as workers in the ,s you never heard of people keeping them as pets Quote Link to post
