Just a quick one as I'm on my phone. I got invited out with a friend to go lamping for foxes on Friday, we got there drove the first two fields and saw a pair of eyes light up we weren't sure what is was so we tried to call it closer as it was sat on the edge of a wood but it turned around and went into the wood. We then got out and walked another three fields where we saw another fox fox in a field down the valley as he got into position it ran off and didn't respond to any calls so we walked back and saw some rabbits I had a .22 so it was my turn unfortunately I was shaking like a leaf and wouldn't be able to hit anything so didn't take the shot. As we got back into the truck and drove onto another farm we saw a rabbit so I took the shot and hit it and finished it off with a second went to pick it up and realised it was a hare so in the bag it went and we carried on to another field and saw another rabbit lined up the shot and missed by a country mile.... we carried on driving and saw another rabbit took the shot hit it in the engine box and went to pick it up realised it was another hare! In the bag with that one too! We carried on driving and saw another fox running off into a hedge as we pulled into a field and it was gone before he got his rifle ready we drove to another farm and saw another rabbit sat tight in some scrub so he took the shot with his .17 and knocked it stone dead we spent about ten minutes looking for it before we found yet another hare! We decided to leave the rabbits (hare) alone and drove a few more feilds before realising it had gone midnight and to call it a night. It was a really good night even though there were bo foxes in the bag there's always next time:) post-62464-139448011465_thumb.jpg

Yeah you should I see your point but both rabbit and hare are similar when sat tight and both legal quarry any time of year unlike the uncertainty with the eye's at the edge of the wood wich weren't shot at because of the uncertainty. All shots were safe in the knowledge that the quarry would be legal and in the capable range of humane dispatch with appropriate calibre.

From your posts those shots weren't taken not because of uncertainty but because you couldn't get a shot off? Regardless of quarry a shot should only be taken once it has been correctly identified and is safe to do so.

I was using a .22 the other guy was after foxes with a bigger calibre and the 3rd guy had his .17. As I said all shots we're thought to be rabbits but we're hares sat tight under the light and being a fairly new shooter I took them saying rabbit as a given all shot's We're safe otherwise I wouldn't have taken them as I didn't with my first possible shot . I do appreciate what your saying and I would feel a right t**t if I took a hasty shot thinking it was something legal and it turns out not to be because of impatients. Just wanted to share my nights outing.
