Countryfile Report On Halal And Kosha Meat

Well I beg to differ. I don't think that any animal going to slaughter can tell that death awaits it. Yes they may seem uneasy....but bundled into a truck and taken to a new place, new smells with all different kinds of calls going on will do that too them. How would they know the smell of death....yes a human who has experienced such things would know this bit how would an animal realise this smell??

When you take a dog to the vet that majority of them do not like it....do they fear death, I doubt it. Do they have a fear of new strange smells, different surroundings...do they remember they felt pain the last time they visited....? maybe!!!

Animals can sense death mate. You go to an animal market, the animals act different to the ones in a slaughter house.

Well I can't see how that's possible mate. I've never been to market sale but I've delivered sheep to the slaughter house and they never seemed any different to me....still stupid things, running and jumping into everything and each other.

I've often thought it when rearing the birds....what are they thinking. When you go in to feed them are they thinking death? When you go to bit them are they thinking death? When you catch them up to take them to estates are they thinking "well this is it!!". I very much doubt it.

So I can't see how an animal can sense death or even smell it when it's no clue what death is? Take the majority on here.....could we smell that 'death smell'....probably....now take that same death smell and ask 100 city folk and would they know? I doubt it.

Reason for that is we have smelt that smell and associated that with death.

I am concerned that in the 21st century we allow religion to dictate the way an animal is killed, be that religion Islam or any other. If we have the means to reduce suffering whilst killing we have a

Everything can sense danger mate, even city folk lol. Are you saying animals are calm in a slaughter house? I've been to loads of animal sales, shows where large volume of animals are there, nice and calm.

Did you even read my post....lol

Of course they can sense danger....more so being a prey species, I've never doubted that.

The debate is do they know death is near..?

I've just had a bit of reading about sheep....they have amazing eyesight and hearing. They scare easily by loud noises because there ears pick up different sounds at different times which startle them. Now stick them in a slaughter house with animals of all kinds getting bundled around, gates slamming shut and folk shouting they are obviously getting stressed.

Does that mean they sense death???

Every animal lets out a distress call, whether its a rabbit, crow, lamb, cow..... They all can read each others calls as anyone sneaking up on anything knows if he's been spotted by a bird. I'm sure if the sheep has acute hearing, it hears distress alright. You ever heard the pigs squealing?

I'm not doubting that......we are not trying to distinguish fear. It's death we are on about.

Fear of death go hand in hand mate, unless you think animals fear spiders lol.

So what your saying is they go to slaughter house and there crying out "were gonna die"...and when they go to market there wandering about quiet like it's a day out shopping in Edinburgh???

Pretty much. I've been to the royal highland show countless times, all breeds of animals there, nice and relaxed. Admitted, I've only been to the slaughter house say a dozen times and the animals are far from quiet. Even at animal auctions, the ATMOSPHERE is different. Animals are more intelligent and can sense better than your giving them credit for. Do you think they stand in a que at the slaughter house and say, oh there's Larry getting killed, rip old lad, glad it ain't me. They know what's happening alright. Read birds posts, he's stared them in the face.

The Royal Highland Show...aye that's similar..lol

Looks like we will have to agree to disagree.......I don't think they smell death or sense it. They don't go to slaughter houses for a walk around then go home again so there's no way of working out that a slaughter house is bad news.

I think folk are getting fear and the sense of "what's coming next" mixed up.

If you sensed death would you try everything on your power to escape? Why don't cows struggle all the way? They are walked into pens with a guy with a stick....would you rather die or take him on?

I wasn't gonna chip in any more on this thred, for me it was put up, as I said, to highlight both the government and rspca, not the ethics of slaughter BUT what I will say is that I really don't give a flying feck how any animal in a slaughterhouse dies, stunned, not stunned, throat cut, stunned not stunned, if its there, its gonna die, end of! Which ever way, (and one takes a bit longer than the other), provided its done right by the guidelines set for that practice/procedure, so what..!

I certainly don't give a feck about if it senses death or not... Its there, its gonna happen...!
