bird 9,897
I used show bullmastiffs in the 80s, and the breed was fecked with all health probs , I came out of the breed for that reason. But when I seen other breeds there aswell ,and seen the state the were in I knew I done right thing leaving that crap behind . Rather have x bred dog any day of the week, at least they healthy and live more than 7 years and not silly prices to buy a dog 3 Quote Link to post

roybo 2,873
If they are the pinnicle of their breeds why is it they are so fat? The poodle (with the exception of its stupid hair cut) looked fairly fit, unlike the Rottweiler and Irish wolfhound 1 Quote Link to post

cocker 2,654
i watched crufts, and felt pretty sick looking at what the show people and kennel club have done to working breeds, and those dancing dogs are just f@cking crackers really. 1 Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
I dunno go on Preloved and your see silly named crosses they want more than a pure. I agree the cockerpoo, chorky and backstreet breeders of other fashionable crosses make pedigree dog breeders look like angels. These people are un regulated and cause more suffering to dogs due to greed. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
One of the problems is that the ignorant public see these 'super' dogs at Crufts, think "Aw, I want one of those", then go to a breeder and think that because their dogs are pure breeds, and win shows, those breeders actually know what they are talking about. In my (admittedly limited) contact with KC breeders, I was shocked at how thick, ignorant and blind those people were. Not saying they are all like that no more than saying all lurchermen are idiots, but here's a couple of examples........... One example: many years ago, I once spent a weekend at an Irish Wolfhound breeder's place. the dogs lived, bred and died in a set of old railway carriages in the middle of a paddock. They never went anywhere else. OK, I suppose they might have been counted as lucky for they did get let out in the field to run (stagger) about for half an hour or so every day, so long as it wasn't raining. Those dogs stunk to high heaven, were about as fat as you could get etc etc. And the breeder was a vet, if I remember rightly. Second example: Husky and Samoyed breeder I used to do the pest control for in the 90s. Dogs kept in tiny wire pens no more than a meter square, let out into almost as tiny yard for 'exercise'. Needless to say, for a breeds that have a lot of energy, they were all screaming nut cases. And all the feckin breeders can do is eulogise over their dogs' conformation, coat, etc. Who gives a shit about temperament, aptitude, exercise needs etc etc. And just to illustrate the complete opposite: one of my clients recently got a Cockerpoo. The dog is amazing: temperament spot on, intelligent, and really nice, if you can get past the silly coat and the fact that it was bred for the pet market. What is more amazing were the hoops the new owner had to jump through to get the dog, and he came with a list as long as your arm about his needs, both mental and physical. However, his sire is a working Cocker (yes, proper gun dog thing, if you believe their website: just being cynical here) and the dam a small poodle: though it didn't quite look like one of those toy things). I think they paid nearly a grand for the bloody thing, but at least the breeder appears to be doing things properly: pups were reared in the house, socialized and generally done right by. So they're not all bad: I almost wish I had this pup: he's so bright, natural retriever, interactive: bet he'd have made a great bushing dog if he didn't spend most of his time caught up in brambles 3 Quote Link to post
