If you want a visual lesson in how to best ruin a mutt, through ignorance and greed, then watch crufts and see what misery and suffering the kennel Club as brought about in the name of canine fashion.

And this is how they should look.

Another working bred beddy

One of the problems is that the ignorant public see these 'super' dogs at Crufts, think "Aw, I want one of those", then go to a breeder and think that because their dogs are pure breeds, and win shows, those breeders actually know what they are talking about. In my (admittedly limited) contact with KC breeders, I was shocked at how thick, ignorant and blind those people were. Not saying they are all like that no more than saying all lurchermen are idiots, but here's a couple of examples...........

One example: many years ago, I once spent a weekend at an Irish Wolfhound breeder's place. the dogs lived, bred and died in a set of old railway carriages in the middle of a paddock. They ne9ver went anywhere else. OK, I suppose they might have been counted as lucky for they did get let out in the field to run (stagger) about for half an hour or so every day, so long as it wasn't raining. Those dogs stunk to high heaven, were about as fat as you could get etc etc. And the breeder was a vet, if I remember rightly.

Second example: Husky and Samoyed breeder I used to do the pest control for in the 90s. Dogs kept in tiny wire pens no more than a meter square, let out into almost as tiny yard for 'exercise'. Needless to say, for a breeds that have a lot of energy, they were all screaming nut cases.

And all the feckin breeders can do is eulogise over their dogs' conformation, coat, etc. Who gives a shit about temperament, aptitude, exercise needs etc etc.

And just to illustrate the complete opposite: one of my clients recently got a Cockerpoo. The dog is amazing: temperament spot on, intelligent, and really nice, if you can get past the silly coat and the fact that it was bred for the pet market. What is more amazing were the hoops the new owner had to jump through to get the dog, and he came with a list as long as your arm about his needs, both mental and physical. However, his sire is a working Cocker (yes, proper gun dog thing, if you believe their website: just being cynical here) and the dam a small poodle: though it didn't quite look like one of those toy things). I think they paid nearly a grand for the bloody thing, but at least the breeder appears to be doing things properly: pups were reared in the house, socialized and generally done right by. So they're not all bad: I almost wish I had this pup: he's so bright, natural retriever, interactive: bet he'd have made a great bushing dog if he didn't spend most of his time caught up in brambles :tongue2:

yeh I know what you mean penny , as said back in the 80s the bullmastiffs were +are not the like dog of 30s that could work all night with a keeper as a night dog, most were were only 80-100 lb not like to day 10st wreaks .Even back then couple of breeder I knew were thinking of putting a ridgeback to bullmastiff to try to get lighter healthy type dog , but I think you know where that would go lol. And to be honest one of the best bullmastiffxs I ever seen was a pit x bullmastiff ( Bandog) bloodly great dog was about 24in 70 odd lb fit+healthy ok shaper temp , but that's how the old bullmastiff were to man or other dogs, not like the docile ped things of today

I watched it the other day and got myself all wound up lol. Presenter even came out with something like "this breed is classed as a category (something) which means if the KC standards are followed too closely they cause serious health problems"

Well stop imposing those standards and/or following them fucktards!

And they call us cruel

I didn't watch it, I can't these days as I find it all a bit sickening. I hate the breed information given, this dog will do this or that, my Mrs said the commentator said the Yorkie was still capable of dealing with rats... Or mice..!! It's that bollox that kills me when you see an over preened rat on the end of a lead..!

Those big slab sided show greyhounds... I wonder how one of those poor feckers would do round a track or in the field? I betcha when the EBT's came up the fools still referred to 'em as 'The Gladiator of the Canine Race', they always do, in my ancient Observers books it says it and has been used ever since!!

My cousin is married to a dick that breeds, shows and judges Beagles, makes a pretty penny out of 'em too, whenever he wants sommat new he breeds. Thing is, he just can't see it, he can't see what he's doing, he can't see that his own animals are under exercised, neurotic poor excuses for dogs. He, like almost all of 'em, still believe that the dogs he owns are 'propper' beagles, no different that those off a hunt and thats just the problem, they all believe this tripe and don't see the harm and damage they have done....!

What a crock it all is and I also was saddened to see Claire Balding presenting. As a horse woman I really would have thought she would oppose show shite in place of working animals...

Didn't couldn't watch it,grew up around kc show dogs..

Some of the strangest cruelest people i ever did meet...

Dogs that live in crates, and i mean live in em..whippets that ain't allowed very much exercise because muscle ruins there gait, mud balds there skin.

I would much rather come back as a hare or fox than one of them CRUFTS dogs..

Yea the beagles are bad enough but what has happened to the Bassett disgrace

I saw a discussion somewhere on the net and the show breeders wouldn't have it they were wrong .they said the working

Bassetts are mongrels and they have the "true" type ,shameful.

The whippet is one of the few breeds that hasn't been ruined by the showing brigade, mainly because many of the top breeders up until the ban were coursing, racing and showing the same animals.

How long that will continue is open to question as the show dogs seem to be getting bigger, with slab sides and don't look like they could turn too well. Having said that most of the whippets at Crufts could still do what they were originally bred for to some extent. Not sure if that applies to the other running breeds - the winning saluki looked like it moved nicely to me but got no idea if it could graft or not.

The dog in the pics is pure showbred and is a grandson of the first whippet to win Best In Show at Crufts. He's a very determined little rabbiter.

Kind of any way, there would be plenty other breeds capable of a days work of some sort.

but any dog capable of getting its ticket,is way to valuable to be out running rabbits ect, koreans ,americans,or just breeding=money.
