Casso 1,261
The issue you have is that the chickens activate his prey instinct whereas the training recalls and stop whistle don't have any connection to prey making Your instructions don't activate drive in the young dog the situation is different in an experienced dog who knows through experience that both of you are a partnership and you channel his drive , the two of you working towards the same goal , he flushes you shot and he gets to mouth and retrieve , so the stop instruction in that case is just another avenue to be undertaken to stay working in tandem with you and that's what he wants more than anything but in a young dog that connection has not been make it takes time but most of all it takes Drive , a dog working in drive with its owners makes the bond, not petting feeding or treats It's through the hunt the dog becomes social , it makes itself comply to fit with your instructions Manage manage manage young dogs so they can't f**k up , the chickens stimulated the pup it energised him and here is the thing , the energy doesn't go away it gets stored eventually builds up and spills out and carnage happens but the pup is only acting on instinct bred down through generations For the retrieve use a ball or dummy it then becomes a prey item in the pups mind something for him to focus his drive on , you can introduce stop signals and recall as a way of the pup gaining access to the item , it is also laying down a history of the two of you working in drive, The way of overcoming the chicken prob is to give the dog something to make prey on with the chickens in the background, the stimulation caused by the chickens is then focused on taking instructions from you in drive , in the same mind set which caused him up f**k off in the first place , Or you can just kick the shit out of him or shout him down but the chicken issue won't go away its only subdued with you around ,they will still stimulate the pup with no avenue to prey making , it's all prey making to the pup whether it's fowl or pheasant, confrontation with the pup will only cause issues later on in the relationship Best of luck Quote Link to post

Most keepers I've spoke to have just been telling me to steady him round the chicks and leather him if he moves round them so what you've said is really what I needed to hear. Thanks again pal Quote Link to post
