jossa 971
A few years ago a mate of mine had a dog of this breeding, same colour as a ridgeback even had a small ridge in his coat. What a dog he was, hard as nails and a good dog on all quarry. Anyone else ever experienced this cross? Quote Link to post

dogmad riley 1,345
Doesn't the bull add that through? I always thought ridgebacks were baying dogs like great Danes, etc. Quote Link to post

trenchfoot 4,243
Are these opinions on ridgeback x's based on experience, and if so how much? Not arguing just interested, especially their running/physical attributes Quote Link to post

bird 9,941
nothing a decent bull or wheaten couldn't Like I say pal ridgebacks were bred for baying lions I can't see were that would benifit a lurcher. they were bred for that , but in this country most are just show dogs. But I did know a lad who ridgeback in his lurcher and it was good dog regards wind+guts, but it did have drop of bull in aswell , it worked out about 1/4 ridge back to w.b.g , so could have been any of the other breeds come through .But they deff give bit of guarding to the lurcher as ridgebacks make good guards if nothing else lol Quote Link to post
fox digger 1,086
if a chap resorts to breeding from generations of non working stock what does he hope to achieve?? how many ridgebacks have worked in the uk or eire?? imo fek all, so why bother. to gain size and heavier build maybe but you will find other working dogs to add them qualities plus more. if its not broke dont fix it, there is a cross there for all game and a ridgeback isnt present in any of them so why bother.......... 1 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
There was a litter (maybe two) bred about 15 years back with Ridgeback in 'em. All the ones i knew made very good dogs, particularly on bigger gear BUT they had a fair % of bull in 'em too, so I could never be sure that the Ridgeback did add anything for the dog... Lets be dead honest here, if we all read an Observers book of dogs (showing my age!) from 20 years ago, apart from the 'Toy' breeds, every dog could be used as a worker BUT the reality is that they can't and, as Bird said, are simply show dogs with 99% of the work bred out of 'em. Yep, maybe in their native SA and in Oz there are some that'll graft BUT don't start thinking about these dogs as a baseline for Lurcher production.... Don't forget, the ones I seen were bull crosses 'with' Ridgeback in 'em. Makes all the difference IMO.... Quote Link to post
