My First Days Trout Fishing Of The New Season

I managed to book a days leave on Wednesday and headed off to Foremark for the day. After reading the reports for the opening days I must admit that I was quite optimistic. Despit the frosty start to the day the weather looked good with a light south westerly breeze picking up. I tackled up with a green and black fritz lure on a clear intermediate line which I always seem to favour early in the season.

 

I am not one of those effortless casters and after a 3 month layoff my usual very average casting was now p1ss poor and it took me a good while to progress back to mediocrity.

 

After about 45 minutes I was beginning to think that I was doing something wrong as apart from a couple of follows I didn't get a touch. Just as I was considering a change, the line tightened and I wss into a nice 2 lb stockie, which was swiftly returned as I was on a 1 fish plus c and r ticket. I then had another 45 minutes without another pull, despite varying the depths and retrieves. A few anglers nearby were now catching fairly regularly so again I started thinking about a change of tactics. Again as soon as I stopped concentrating another pull. This time a slightly bigger fish getting on for about 3 lbs. After this it was lke a switch had been flicked on and there was a pull every 3 or 4 casts.

 

 

Just before lunch I took a better fish of about 4lbs so decided to take this one for the pot. Then sods law first cast after I finished my ham cobs I hook into my best fish of the day which must have been about 4 1/2 lbs. By now the day had considerably warmed up and all the fish were giving a good account of themselves, and I lost a good few at the net.

 

Things went a bit quieter between 2 and 3pm then picked up again until I packed up at 4pm.

 

I had finished up with 14 fish and best of all was that none of them were under 2 lb the average being around 3.

 

I was not alone in managing to pick up a decent bag as a look along the bank and looking in the catch returns showed that most people had managed between 10 and 20 fish for the day.

 

Ive got to say that I'm really impressed with the quality of the stock ing this year with plenty of good sized fish and to make things even better there well spread out around the resavoir too. The only thing is wether it can carry on like this.

 

Can't wait to get another day booked off now.

Had my first day this year last Friday, we went to Wincle near Macclesfield, it's a really nice fishery, cheap and in nice surroundings, one of the best things about it....No mobile reception! Weather looked horrible but promised to get nicer after ten am. Took the mutt for a walk before leaving and when we got up there it was a lovely weather. Young rabbits playing in the sun, cock pheasants making a racket and I didn't forget anything....even treated ourselves to some posh coffee and danish pastries. Unfortunately I blanked but since everything else was really nice it wasn't so much a big deal like it would have been at some of the other less attractive places. My dad sitting next to me using the same flies pulled out 4 fish one of them a good 5 Lber but nothing I did made any difference. Got home with that nice tired and unstressed feeling to be rewarded by the neighbor moaning about my fecking dog who'd been whining all day....great lol

Nik know what you mean about the mobile coverage. I didn't realise how much I'd missed the fishing until after I got back home. Can't wait to get another booked off now.

Yes my best opening day for a few years.

How long are the stockies in the water you fish as i could not imagine them been too tasty.The lake i fish holds quite a lot of wild brown trout aswell as stockies and rainbows and i have to say there is no comparison taste wise,although when the rainbows are in the water for a few months there not bad eating.

Not 100% sure but not long as its only just reopened. Taste wise there probably on par with what you would get from the supermarket, but will improve after they've been in for a few months like you say.

the stockies are grown pretty much exactly the same as commercially farmed supermarket trout
