toby63 1,236
ive shot many in daylight its not hard if you know your land well Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Thanks for the quick reply. Just had a call off a Farmer and he's asked me to clear the foxes before he turns the lambs out. He prefers shooting them in the day if possible. I'm planning to bait them over a week and then shoot them. Or set a hide up and start calling them in, I'm using a HMR as havnt yet got a CF so going to keep ranges to 100yards max Thanks Atb Dan Quote Link to post
swede40 92
Baiting the edges of cover with a shootable backdrop in the early morning first light has produced a few in the past for me but i was useing a centre fire at longer than 100 yds ranges i dont see why not with a hmr if you have suitable cover my mate uses a portable highseat to decent effect on foxes with a hmr in the daytime Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Terriers. Or Gun Pack Or Snares. All three will be more successful. Or all of the above and shooting on top! 1 Quote Link to post

Or all of the above and shooting on top! he might not have accessto any of the above and the farmer might not want it done that way but i agree it would be more effective with a fox drive Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
I can't use snares because of the sheep. And he dosnt want dogs their. I have a cocker I was hoping to use their for the crows but he is against dogs. Not sure what a gun pack is? He has sheep on the fields now just not lambs and their mothers. Thanks for all the help chaps Quote Link to post
swede40 92
A gun pack is usually a small pirate pack of hounds or hound crosses that hunt sections of cover for a line of guns placed around the cover being hunted they are very effective if done right Quote Link to post

shropshire dan 467
Cheers Toby. Going for a recce tomorrow will keep my eye out for tracks, runs etc. The owner has seen foxes like clockwork at 10am so gonna get their at 8am setup and hopefully they will wander into the firing line Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
IMO at this time of year to shoot foxes in daylight all depends on how educated your foxes are. Foxes at this time of year will be out and about but to get down wind and call them in successfully will depend on how much attempts over the Winter have been made on them by unsuccessful lads. 1 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Make a midden? Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
What's a midden? They havnt been shot at on his 180 acre plot for 3 years. Previously the chap had great success on them. That's not to say they havnt been shot at on other land. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
A stink pit. You basically create an area where you dump all of the dead stuff, and at this time of year afterbirth, dead lambs etc. Any vermin you shoot etc. Normally you would create only a certain number of routes to it and set snares on them. But you could make it somewhere that is hidden away, so the fox feels safe, rather than in the open, but with maybe a high seat put up for you to ambush them? Then try early mornings and evenings. Obviously baiting them requires a removal of easy alternatives, so if he lambs outside and there is afterbirth lying all over the fields.. . . .that might make it a bit tougher. Quote Link to post
