lucky 578 Posted March 4, 2014 Report Share Posted March 4, 2014 At 2 year old I'd just continue digging it some of the better dogs I've seen have had loads of digs before they get to 2.. Just out of curiosity how many of them better dogs that started early are still around today??? As a lot of the younger dogs ive ever seen that started before 15/16 months, they started off great ended up being pts, ps that doesn't mean that all dogs that start young don't make the grade There's plenty still around very few have been pts but quite a few have died to ground. By 2 year old they will of had loads of work and they love it. I think if left til 2 to start they'd be very wreckless and a nightmare at home, there drive is unreal from 8 months on. This however is just my opinion on the dogs we have and I've seen plenty of dogs that have been much older that just don't seem to show any interest. Would I own one of these late starters ? swede40 92 Posted March 4, 2014 Report Share Posted March 4, 2014 i wouldnt like to have to wait till 2 years plus to see what i had it makes it alot easier if you know the line of dogs to judge but even in some of the best lines there is still litter waste if a dog is wanting to go at 16mths so be it i guarentee that out of a litter of say 6 3 to 4 pups out the litter would possibly make it and i would end up with the 2 duck egg's i would rather know they were duck eggs a year earlier Quote Link to post

rossthedog 76 Posted March 4, 2014 Report Share Posted March 4, 2014 Depends what you mean by holding back,just to let a dog sit in a kennel for 2 years wouldn't be much cop,or do you mean let it work the simpler places straight forward type earths just to build its confidence, some dogs do need the thinking done for them like, foxdropper says standards must be kept and waiting forever for a dog to start isn't good enough I like borders but I expect even a border to be entered and making progress by 2 years of age.
