Through Thick And Thin

Recommended Posts

Well with most packs starting to wide proceedings down this time of year myself and my good mate P see a spike in activity .Due to the end of the shooting season and the opportunity to run hounds through those forbidden pheasant laden coverts and woods. I particularly look forward to this time of year because a good keeper knows whats on the ground and that little piece of inside information can be the key to success even if the odds are firmly against you.

As ever a plan was set and phone calls made but a number of unfortunate event conspired against us once again but unfazed we ventured on. Due to the lack of fire power I took a decision not bring any of my hounds and let P's more than capable little hounds do all the work which gave me the opportunity to flank each covert with a lurcher ( it was nice not to get home not covered in scratches bruises  )

We arrived at the keepers house to a warm welcome and after a good chin wag and catch up plans were reset . we were really limited with what we could do with only three of out but I refer back to my previous statement about the inside information again. The first covert was not large by anyone's standards but there were lots escapes routes for a wise old foe that had been used to a beating line for a number of weeks. The hounds were unloaded and off P went while the sense of excitement and anticipation grew. Within a very short time indeed our ears were rewarded with the unmistakable note of P's lead dog hound opening up, soon followed by the rest in a chorus of breath taking music( and we only had a few out  ).

What ever had got them so vocal wasn't hanging about and soon left the first covert across a brook under a fence and over open ground to a safer place ( nomally). The hounds were applying alot of pressure making short work of the first check and on thru some very very thick cover when a call came over the radio that one had been accounted for but it wasn't the one they were all hunting, as the thick brambles caused a fewof the hounds to split. By know my faithful lurher bitch was straining at the leash to in on the action but I hoped the action was coming my way. My hope were smashed by a loud bang and a very good shot from distance ( but I'm not telling the Keeper that lol  ). The rabbit rolled over just off the field margin and it wasn't long before the pack had caught up with another one of the things they love so much.

To say I was over the moon was an understatement because to account for a brace in such a short time and so thin on the ground give a man an enormous sense of satisfaction. Don't get me Wrong it's not the actually accounting for them that provides the satisfaction but being part of such a knowledgeable team ( and even pulling my own weight from time to time )

Now this wasn't the end of the day by any means and we ventured on and had more fun along the way, but you probably have all fallen asleep already because when it comes to reminiscing about hounds I do tend to go off on a tangent lol. Thanks for taking the time to read and happy hunting all

By-eck BAW that tale took me back some years. It was like I was 15 again and reading Jack Ivester-Lloyd in the shooting times. The hours I poured over his tales of his bobbety pack, a different time I know, but the result to the reader is still the same.

RAW I just looked at my post and it seems I have offended you greatly. Some how in my dotage I called you BAW and for that Titanic mistake I apologies unreservedly.
