I believe that the deliberate hunting of squirrels with dogs would now fall foul of the hunting act - daft I know, but squirrels are mammals but are not rats or rabbits.

Obviously lots of dogs chase squirrels in the park before their owners can react and lurchers, being fast dogs, would catch more than most. I don't see how these sort of accidents can be avoided where dogs run free.

as john says above i agree with however lets not forget they are vermin if its greys we are talking about dont forget the damage they do to the songbird population.anyway i have had a few with the lurcher shall we say and they are lively characters jinking and twisting your dog all over the place she has picked up a few when she has been of the lead cant leave her alone for a few seconds little devils lurchers.

I've had a couple of lurchers that have taken them but they're very agile and if they don't get the correct initial hold then they can certainly bite back. My old kelpie has caught a few too but he initially had the daft habit of trying to retrieve them live. :wallbash: Apparently, they taste better than rabbit, though as yet I've not built up the courage to try; has anybody else ever given them a go?

Have taken them in the past but enjoy it more with the terriers.

around 5 yrs ago i had a few weeks at it on some forest plantations, my terrier bitch( sadly no longer ) and a few lads with 410's.

great sport if the tree rat got on the floor, the first one was taken by the tail and made a mess of my bitches nose.
