Alright everyone lately ive been having a bit of look around for a new bushing dog, the brittany spaniel we used to use is now retired and the jack russell terrier is 8 so in need of something new, from the title obviously im interested in teckels, dont really know anything about the breed so would be grateful if anyone has any info on working ability pros cons anything really. Are the pures any good or go for a spaniel or terrier x. Anyone know any breeders of working teckels or anyone breeding any decent xs. Pics would be good to if anyone has any, Cheers everyone

They are used a lot over here (cont. eu) above and below ground. They are very very game, depending on which type/size you get great as an allround little pest control dog. Ratting, tracking, rabbiting/ferretin, bushing, boar dog, fox dog, deer dog. They usually are pretty good retrievers, don't mind water. Handy dogs in thick bramble patches.

If you're used to a brittany I wonder if you will ever get used to a teckel,... a Brittany will cover so much more ground.

I see what your saying about getting used too a different type of worker but from working the spaniels in cover id say they were the best dog for the job! BUT to be honest I prefer the short legged russell we use, just seems to work better along side the lurchers whereas I think spaniels work better on there own flushing to guns and such, by what you say teckels just seem even more appealing seems theres nothing they cant do, but above all really for me I need something that is just going to work the hedgerows and really dense cover flushing for the lurchers would you say it would be well suited for this ? cheers

Yes would be well suited, might drop to ground though. They work pretty well in a pack, guess that's the hound in them.

They have the short legs for a reason, not only to work below ground but also to not flush game with to great a speed and of course to have the nose close to the ground.. They are known for getting game moving but not to fast for guns to still be able to aim. Some gunmen rate them because of this.

I'd really like a Teckel as an addition, if they'd only come in white+red/black and slightly less shortlegged. Thinking about putting a working teckel over my current little bushing dog. Due to the size of the permissions I work on a dog that doesn't cover ground as fast as some of the bigger dogs do might be nice to work with. Just do like a dog with a high search/workrate, lovely site to see.

They have great stamina and are usually very muscular, just take their size into account. For the Kaninchen Teckels getting over a fallen tree is like climbing mount everest. Thick grass could also be a challenge for some.
