Dan25 87
What age would you expect a puppy to start notice rabbits when on walks etc not catch rabbits as I no patience is a must with a pup but just to notice a little prey drive Quote Link to post

desertbred 5,490
most running dogs will chase anything that moves from 10/12 weeks old be it another pup or paper blowing in the wind . its natural even to chase each other in play so to chase a rabbit at 18 weeks woulldnt be unusual not saying it would get any where near it but chase it , I would be cocerned if a pup wasnt showing chasing instinct at 3 months any thing with prey drive will. yellowdog 12
Don't care to be honest, there is no such thing as a dog that steadfastly wont go for a bunny at some stage in it development (unless the owner breaks it of the tendancy). Give me any dog from one of those little bald lap dogs to a great dane and I will get it to try. Look at a working gundog like a spaniel. The trainer / owner breaks it of the tendancy to chase unshot game and sit to flush etc. Give the same dog a lightly shot bird or rabbit to chase and it will be after it as keen as any lurcher (if somewhat slower). If you have a dog that wont yet then I suggest you just have one of the sensitive type that requires different training to the gungho dimwit (that often as not turns into a one slip dog, with the equal recall of a bullet) 1 Quote Link to post
