GEOFF.223 83
Always keep my guns with a light coating of oil when I go out when its a bit wet but it gets rubbed off easy. Is the anything else I could put on that lasts longer I was thinking of mizing some oil with a liquid waxto help Iit bind to gun for longer wear for whenIim out. Any idea's? 1 Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
Just make sure you dry and clean it when you get back and don't put it back in the cabinet cold or wet. If its has a soaking and moisture has crept down the bolt, around the action and under the bedding I give it a blast with a Napier spray before putting it back in the slip and then let it dry with the bolt out when I get back. Oil/wax sounds like a lot of mess and hassle personally and still won't avoid the problem. 1 Quote Link to post
GEOFF.223 83
The prob im getting is I usually only get out every couple of weeks at the min and when I get out I do a all nighter usually 8/10hrs and I can see small blemishes appearing on barrel . Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
If you fired the gun enough for the barrel to get hot with a mixture of wax and oil on it then I dare say it will melt and fix itself very firmly to the barrel, Because of the blueing you can't use anything abrasive to remove it and it would look a mess. Tornado1979 145
I've always used ballistol and I've never had any issues mate, usually quick rub down with cloth coated in it when I get home. 1 Quote Link to post
Elliott 436
I've always used ballistol and I've never had any issues mate, usually quick rub down with cloth coated in it when I get home.I use the same but suspect any oil would do. No skimping on this one I'm afraid, if you get drenched put in the extra effort and strip the rifle, dry off any excess water, let it dry out and get it oiled up before putting it away. One little tip I have for you is to always carry a black bin bag with you. They scrunch up to nothing and if you find yourself in a heavy downpoor just put it over your rifle Edited February 27, 2014 by Elliott 3 Quote Link to post
Bunny Boiler 177
The prob im getting is I usually only get out every couple of weeks at the min and when I get out I do a all nighter usually 8/10hrs and I can see small blemishes appearing on barrel .I assume you take a 10 minute coffee break during this? If not, take one and whilst on it, give the rifle a quick wipe down and re-oil? Problem solved, no mess, good gun care. As said above. Avoid wax, and good oil - if the wax isn't completely tight to the barrel, you may find that it traps moisture underneath between wax and barrel, or if there is a small amount of condesation when applying that you trap it there. This would just worsen your problem. Oil is the way to go. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Abbey used to do a wax back in the 80s that we used to put on the air rifles, but all drew the conclusion that it was more bother than it was worth, as said carry a bin bag or similar Quote Link to post
BLACK-GUN 94
I've always used ballistol and I've never had any issues mate, usually quick rub down with cloth coated in it when I get home. 100% With Tornado on using Ballistol, never had any problems. But you might be like my Son who has rust problems because he dont clean and wipe down after use, because he is a LAZEY CNT. 2 Quote Link to post
GEOFF.223 83
No lazi-c**t-itis here pal. I look after my gear carry a plastic tube/bag with me which we use in work for directing ventilation, and a oily rag in each gun bag with small Guinness towels I borrowed from a p an o ferry boat to dry them. Just sick to death doing it but then again im out all night and do it several times and its does my head in cause im ocd when they get wet. Both my rifle seem to handle any moisture very badly. Never had problems with the shotguns tho they would be shot more and heat will drive moisture out. What about the vinyl stuff for camouflaging a rifle will it prevent rust? There's bound to be a better product out there than just bog standard gun oil???????? 1 Quote Link to post

Yokel Matt 918
It's the chamber you've got to watch out for. Once that starts getting pitted you're trouble. Forget tape, the colour only fades and makes the whole thing look rubbish. Getting the rifle dipped is a possible option though, lots of options and quite a durable finish I believe. GEOFF.223 83
Looks like I'll just continue wiping with the trusted oily rag. Or go stainless in the future. Anyone I now starting shoiting I have pushed them towards stainless as our climate is bollocks and seems to wreck everything with iron in it. Quote Link to post
