Taking back what they consider to be Russian anyway, would not be a return to the Cold War. Look at it from Russias point of view, ie that the EU is trying to take a country into its sphere that will take the EU up to the Russian border. I am in no way an apologist for Russia, but they are not trying to invade Western Europe, but trying to protect their own borders. However right or wrong that is.

 

I know what you're saying I just think it's hard to justify even in Russian brains........ If the Ukrainians decide democratically to ally themselves with the EU how is that a direct threat to the Russian Fed'? The EU is no enemy of Russia. They'll have a hard job justifying an invasion on those grounds......

I'd personally say the E U is the enemy of democracy everywhere ! They want a "Greater Europe" to rival the US and want to do away with Independent Sovereign States in Europe; so I'm not suprissed the Russians are pissed off.

No mate, the yanks refused to get involved in Syria; that's why we backed out, quite rightly, as well. The wars in the Middle East were because of oil, but now, due to cracking, the US has no need for Middle East oil, so has moved on to Asia.

 

Eh? It was going to be a yank led strike...... They pulled out because they lost home political support because we pulled out, not the other way around. It would certainly have been a US led Op, possibly/probably handing over control to a French/UK coalition as with Libya for political reasons.

 

Fracking may have given the yanks self sufficiency (as I hope it will improve ours) but they still have HUGE bussiness interests in the Middle East. That aside, we're talking their 'old enemy', the red army, I can't see NATO letting Russia start seriously throwing thei weight about in such a way as a Ukrain invasion. You said yourself, the Russians are unpredictable....... you see how dangerously unpredictable they get if they are given the slack to invade Ukrain.

Can you imagine if Russia started making overtures to Alaska or Canada about joining the Russian Federation ? America would be at DefCon3 already and the world would be looking at the nuclear clock as it headed towards 12 ! Still, it ' nice to have a sensible debate on here once in a while !

China is the sleeping giant, if Russia did decide to initiate military action, NATO would have to seriously think about its response. The balance of power in the world is shifting. The U.S. is no longer in a position to throw its weight around as it once did and the Americans know it. A cold war situation in my opinion is a very real possibility if the politics are not played out correctly. Right or wrong if Russia do start getting heavy over this, I can not imagine NATO directly striking Russia, that would be starting WW3. Saying that though, wars have been started over much less The U.S. does not have the stomach for Russia, it knows that the body bags will come flying in and is still haunted by Vietnam, the middle eastern wars have killed a lot of americans but a conflict with another world power, with both sides using todays tech is almost unimaginable........................... let us all hope that the politicians have more sense than we think they do

I think it will fizzle out myself. he has to make a stance.however that will all depend on how the rest of ukraine treat the russian speaking people.there a lot who consider themselfs russian.

i agree it will have to be handled with kid gloves,one thing for certain it will cost us money.

I believe that China and Russia make more money with commerce than flexing their military muscle, at the moment. They're trapping more flies with honey than vinegar. Also the Chinese own most of the world's debt! They'll think long and hard before writing off that kind of money!

 

But saying that, everyone has taken their eyes off Russia since the 90's... what have they been up to in that time? Rearming and resupplying?

 

American public opinion on another war would be difficult to spin. They might have the stomach for it but the public won't.

We can only hope it ends without too much foreign intervention. The Ukraine is a major arms supplier and has pretty decent supply of natural resources. Maybe enough to justify securing those assets.

 

I don't believe the US is haunted by Vietnam. Simply because they've been at war for the last 10 years somewhere else. It would be easier to whip up hysteria against the Russians than the Iraqis, or Afghani people. They have the might but the hard part would be selling it the American people.
