I still enjoy a variety of hunting sports and whilst I'm not wishing my season away I must admit that after not catching a fish since September I'm ready to dust the rods off again. I actually spend a lot more time fishing in the summer than I do hunting in the winter now. I can fish just about any day I choose.

I'm a bit of a weirdo when it comes to fishing I love the hard fight from a carp or a day at sea after cod etc but I've become obsessed with catching new species. Regardless of size if I hook something I haven't caught before I'm over the moon lol. I've only gone fishing for the last few summers apart from mackerel bashing as a kid, I'm currently on 76 species caught with rod and line and hoping to make it 100 this summer. I spent two days in Lanzarote last year trying to catch a type of blenny, I failed, like I said its a bit weird.

Well I have just stocked up on flies lol, and will be checking everything over, tonight, as it is opening day on many of our reservoirs very soon, looking forward to a nice pan fried trout

Funny but I've been thinking of getting back to fishing. It was my introduction to fieldsports, coming just before falconry: boyhood missions to secret little lakes that technically should never have known my innocent little float!

Ahh yes I remember those days, not a care in the world, out from dawn till dusk and sometimes considerably longer, we used to walk miles with the airguns, and nobody cared then, so long as we did no harm, well Martin I wish you well with your fishing, it is the perfect pastime for the falconer during the moult, the simple pleasure of the water and nature for company, to quote another of my favourite sporting authors the late great "BB" aka Denys Watkins pichford, "let us be boys once more".

I enjoy hunting but fishing has become a big part of my life, I can fire a gun, slip a lurcher or hawk and be part of the hunt but with fishing your directly attached to your quarry. It's mine to land or lose and making the wrong decision has me wanting to cry, to see a float getting pulled under or to feel something like a ling hitting your lure is just brilliant. Then there's just the power of a good carp when it bends a rod double. Or something like a ray that feels like your lifting up the sea bed. God I love it.

The thing with fly fishing Pointer is that you do not need heaps of tackle, just a rod a couple of different lines, a selection of flies, a net and a few bits and bobs and you are away, you are constantly doing something, ie casting, or tying on a new fly, you are constantly learning, no two fishing days are the same, and of course you have the bonus of some lovely food if you are lucky, try it mate I guarantee you will be hooked,(excuse the pun) it is very addictive.

I keep promising myself I'll get into fly fishing one day.......just before I left England, my mate built his own coracal & we tried it out on Flatford Mill pond.........it was fantastic.....I then had this romantic notion of me drifting down the river, first light, in a coracal with a Tenkara rod.......

I'd still like to give the Tenkara fly fishing a go...........it needs to be very simple for me to cope :-)

I enjoy any fishing. I fished for everything from sticklebacks to marlin last summer in everything from five inches of water in a stream to trolling in the Atlantic. I like variety in my hunting and fishing.

I spent four nights trying to catch a stickleback in full breeding colours. It meant as much to me if not more than the shark, skate and tuna I've caught abroad. Fishing attracts debate like nothing else, my fishing mates cannot understand why I would spend days catching mini species when I could be with them catching hard fighting carp, I divide my fishing up between the species that can bend a rod for several minutes to the ones which couldn't snap 2lb line but are challenging to hook up.

A man would need a hundred lifetimes to do it all and could never run out of new challenges.

Well first fish (trout) of the season on sunday, a nice silver overwintered rainbow about 2.1/2 lbs put up a real scrap as well, did not get a photo as it was chucking it down, and my hands were so cold I dont think I would have been able to work my phone, but I will be dining on trout poached in white wine butter and garlic this evening

Have put the redtail down for an early moult, so its trout fishing and deerstalking taking my attention now, get yourself some fly tackle Pointer, promise you wont regret it
