Ideation 8,216
Was due ferreting this morning, and was out yesterday early doors with the dogs, so planned an early night. Local farmer had other plans, as he'd lost a lamb. So got the gun and went up to the farm in question, early ish, about half ten. Took the dog for company. Sat out, called a bit, nothing doing. . . .went for a bit of a recce, had a look down the valley and there was a big dog fox sat in the hedge of the neighbouring farm. Called a bit but he was wise to it. . . . . So no luck there! I'll need to arrange perm on the next farm and to come up in the day. . . Anyway, as the wind was howling, and I had the dog, thought i'd have a quick hour and give him a few runs as there are a small scattering of rabbits on the farm, not many (as usual local) but enough for a few runs here and there. Anyway, went to walk some big winter wheat. . . . first field, saw one feeding right out in the middle, slipped the dog and after making up the distance it was on, a cracking run. It dragged him around the good size field for a good while, a few turns later, and a bit of boxing and first strike, it was in the bag. Next field, two rabbits sat out a long different hedges, first one a very rare short slip and a quick kill, and the second one, a usual long slip, but again, a quick kill, after only a turn or two. The night went on like that for an hour, I had 12 slips all together and 12 catches, which is great for local as the rabbits don't hang about and it can be pretty hard running at times. Don't know why but the dog was running out of his skin really throwing himself into it, and a pleasure to watch. Not the biggest bag i've had on the lamp this season, but I think, the most enjoyable.
