Tozer 385
I've got some ratting when they clear out the barns in a month or so and an old saw. I was just wondering how you attatch the pipework from the exhaust and what you use? Do you have problems with plastic melting? Quote Link to post
mickmck 716
heat proof pipe would do the trick ???? Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I've never done it, i can picture jubilee clips and short section of steel pipe. Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
You need to get a bit of pipe welded on to the exhaust so you have something to attach the pipe to. Micks right, a 3ft length of heat proof pipe if you can find some Quote Link to post

Tozer 385
Cheers all quick flick through ebay i think. Got a welder so thats no a problem. Don't usually bother but will be good to get a few that are under the concrete Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
When you get sorted mate don't add any extra oil like the dickheads who think u need extra smoke. Run it normally as its meant to be, the fumes are ample theres no need for excessive smoke 2 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Dickheads lol.Done much ratting have we mate .The more oil the less rats get killed by fumes .The more smoke the more bolt .Leave the machine on tick over as the vibration helps get them moving . spade 224
Weld a bit of pipe to the exhaust then get hold of some radiator hose to attach onto that. Quote Link to post

I disagree about the smoke, only need enough fumes to get them bolting not to suffocate them. The rat smokers are piss poor compared to an engine IMO Quote Link to post
BOLSTER 808
Radiator pipe off a Car will work , jubilee clip to a piece of copper pipe & shove it in the exhaust , thats what i done but not had much look with it , seems that rats would prefer to die than come out . Quote Link to post
lucky 578
I've used them in the past with varied success, usually an adapted strimmer or Stihl saw. Sometimes we would get loads bolting but sometimes a lot would die or walk out as if they were on ketamine lol. I found that if there was too much 2 stroke in the fuel it would oil the spark plug up causing the engine to cut out. The best method I ever seen for getting them to bolt was with petrol, we got invited by a keeper to do a load of release pens and all the keeper had was a spray bottle full of petrol and a lighter. He would quickly walk round putting a couple of sprays into each hole then light one. There was a load bang as the blast traveled through the earth and the rats would come out in droves. He must of bolted thousands that day using that method and we had some great sport. 2 Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I'm not sure lighting the holes is a good idea, might be a bit worried about the grain store. Sounds entertaining though! I can remember when i used to work on a chicken farm blocking up the lower holes on a bank and sticking a large bore hose pipe in. it took what felt like an hour but then ended up coming flying out. Tozer 385
Cheers for the tip on the radiator hose. I'll have an ask at the garage. Like i said it looks handy having the smoker for the ones you can't dig out. Quote Link to post
