logan esq 99
hey all, looking for bit of advice "cleaning my rifle" whats the best for cleaning out the barrel? rod or pull through? i have a rod right now but ive been reading on forums that pulling and pushing the rod can sometimes ruin/scratch the inside and nacker up the path of the pellet. Is this true? Any help would be great. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Rods will not harm rifling if they are made of aluminium or an alloy, also go carefully with them near the breech else you might knock an o ring out. Remember only clean the barrel when the gun is new and when groups start to open up. Pull throughs are ok but can be a bit of a pain on some bull barrels and magazine fed guns. A word of warning mind Napier have been selling some faulty pull throughs of late that have been snapping and leaving patches in the gun! Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
my napier pull through kit is ok but ive had it a while. that's what I recommend anyway. Quote Link to post
paulus 26
never felt the need to clean an air rifle barrel, lead does not clog the rifling like copper does and theres no explosive gasses like a bullet or shotgun cartridge? Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
I just clean mine when i get a new gun or if i start using different pellets 1 Quote Link to post
villaman 9,982
Napier pull through for me , never had a problem with them and when your patches have run out ,go to this web site shinyhardware .co.uk and buy sheets of lint free cloth for about £ 3 Quote Link to post
risingfriend 1,042
As above mate a decent pull through kit (Napier) or the felt pellets are not to bad to be honest unless its a new rifle from the factory or your pellet testing or experience your groupings opening up then i would leave well alone Quote Link to post
logan esq 99
Thanks people. It's not a new rifle I've had a while. Think I'll just leave it be unless my groups start to open up. 1 Quote Link to post
gurtwurz 792
Probably the best way mate, if it ain't broke etc... Personally, I've snapped a Napier pull through, but the rest of the kit is good. I use a bore snake for the rare occasions I do clean my barrel, but I don't know if they do a .177 one as I only shoot .22. 2 Quote Link to post
Coypu Hunter 486
I actually cleaned my HW97K's barrel today, on the offchance it would improve my groups. Made bûgger all difference, so I'll revert to my previous philosophy of never cleaning it! No powder, no residue, no point. If I do clean an air rifle barrel -- and when I do clean my 22LR -- I use a pull-through made of a length of strimmer wire (soft plastic) crimped with pliers in the middle to give it a point that will feed from the muzzle to the chamber. For patches I use 2cm squares of old tee-shirts. I soak the patches in Ballistol and pull through until clean, then pull through a couple of dry patches. Cost: zero. Effectiveness: 100%. Simples!
