Daz39 962
Needed to de-stress last night so after all the bad weather I managed to get up to work for the first time in a couple of weeks. I had been to work on the Monday during the day to see the HSE manager, he asked me to walk the site and show where the warrens were and where the damage was being caused. During the walk there were at least 5-6 rabbits out during the day!! You might need to click to make it bigger, but one of the rabbits on the main lawn Another pair in the shadow of the tree, if only I could shoot during the day! Mind, there would be 200+ people going OFF it!! So last night I landed up there around 11:30 and after sorting the scope, I walked out on to the main lawns. Right away there was a pair of rabbits about 45 yrds from security but they were away before I’d got one foot out of the door. As I walked over I spotted a pair of eyes to my left about 40 yards off. I slowly stalked in about 10 yrds to a sign post which I used to steady a standing shot. Rabbit rolled over with a twitch and number 1 in the bag, 10 mins after arriving. It had already started with a soft fine misty drizzle which is LOVELY to hunt in, not. I walked the lawns and only spotted a couple more and they were away. I decided to lay up under a tree near where one of the main runs is. I had seen a rabbit leg it in there so expected him back out. After about 10 mins, sure enough big fat lad runs out and starts munching. I put the cross hairs on and squeezed…..POP. Literally POP, that crappy sound when you have no pellet in the barrel! The rabbit ran back from whence it had come. I couldn’t understand why I had no pellet in, so I reloaded and waited again…..for another 20 mins….until he came back out again. This time, I knew I had cocked the leaver, but once again POP…arrrgh WTF is going on…..ah….the indexing pin….durrrr. When I loaded the mag after zeroing the scope, I’d not pushed the indexing pin in. SO each click of the leaver was loading fresh air….and I can categorically state, fresh air will not kill a rabbit….. The rain was coming on a little heavier now, the rabbits were quieter last night and the ground was so wet I couldn’t lay up. I decided to do the “pull the car up and shoot out of the boot” trick. I pulled up to the first spot and waited 20 mins, nothing out behind me, but a pair off at an acute angle that I couldn’t shoot at. I moved the car and tried a different spot. Withing 2-3 mins a rabbit came out of a burrow not even 5 yrds from the boot. The problem was I couldn’t get the rifle to point low enough because of the boot, and the AO was set at 30 yrds so everything was a blurr. I decided to watch it to see if it would move away from the car a little so I could get a bead on him, but he ended up going behind a tree. I held on another 15 mins and he came back out again. This time 15 yrds maximum. I put the cross hairs on, pulled the trigger and heard the pellet hit the grass. How the hell did I miss that? Clearly too close and not enough adjustment on the mil dots. Gutted and in a strop, I got out of the car and stalked another rabbit on the lawn. I don’t use the lamps in most places, but this rabbit was behaving oddly. Hopping away but changing direction often. I took a knee and shot him in the head from 23-24 yrds. When I picked him up, his eyes were half closed, not Mixy again PLEASE!! On skinning this one, I also found a .22 pellet in his fur (Wrong flavour for me), it hadn’t penetrated the muscle, just lay under the pelt and was totally un-deformed. So 2 in the bag and time to take the car round the back of the site. I pulled up with the boot facing down the road and the window open facing where I know a warren to be. After 10 mins a rabbit came out, again 10 yrds max from the car….except it was IN FRONT of my windscreen!!! Ah man, I pulled up at the wrong spot. I couldn’t do a thing but watch him. Dirty teasing rabbit!!! When he ran I decided to get out and walk to the warren. As I snook round a corner I spotted a shape on a grass bank. Using the corner of the building as support, I took a 26 yrd standing shot and down she went. 3 nice head shots. I decided on one last walk around the front as the rain had stopped. Over by the nature reserve were 2 rabbits, about 50 yards away. I walked very slowly over to them and go to within 28-20 yrds and took aim on one. Just as I pulled the trigger he moved and the pellet hit the grass and he hit turbo boost and legged it. For some reason his buddy just sat there, so with a quick click on the loading arm, cross hairs on, bang, head shot 4 and the game bag was full. I always head back to security when I get to 4 rabbits. I had seen maybe 20+ out tonight which was good, but still quieter than normal. I pulled off site to clean the rabbits and decided to have a look in a field that the company also own but rent out to a farmer. I have just been given permission to shoot it (And to take a buddy up with me also!! – just waiting to see the farmer to sign the papers), and looking last night, I was counting 30-40 rabbits easy. It is a farm field so the ground won’t be as cushy as on site, but heck, it is teaming. 4 more to the butcher, kids get pocket money again! Edited February 19, 2014 by Daz39 1 Quote Link to post

Daz39 962
Thanks Jim! Well Mac, Matt, Visla, Den, I'll be in touch in turn, but I've spoken to the farmer who rents the land and he is over the moon that I can go and hit the bunnies. I had the ok from work to take a buddy up, so I'll give you a shout. The field was proper bouncing again last night, so you WILL fill a bag, NO WORRIES!! Some are running when I lamp, most just sit there like dumb feckers...honestly FISH IN A BARREL...... Can't wait to get you up for a pop.... What was it you said Matt? Karma being a good thing? I can't wait to see Mac's eyes light up when he lamps the field for the first time! haha, he'll be like a kid at christmas!!! Nice to finally be able to repay all the generousity shown to me over the last 8-10 months! 3 Quote Link to post
