Stop Whistle

Recommended Posts

ok then when she lays down put her in the sit position and when she sits praise her and if she lays down again lift her up and just keep doing that, sound like she is a bit shy so be careful keep that high pitched praise and loads of it when she does it right say nothing when she does something wrong, she will soon learn to please

Hi Slipper

I did this video a couple of days ago, this is my 2 yr old and although he has the basics I still throw in the occasional whistle to keep him active, as I said before never set your dog up to fail, if you don't think he will sit because he is not concentrating on you then don't blow it, in this video he is working his way back to me so I just blew to see he can still do it. as he matures I will go for the instant sit but you have to allow time for that to sink in. Im pleased with him for a 2 yr old anyway

Very good, well just to let you know I have her sitting and staying on one pip on the whistle, whilst on the lead, still having to prop her up sometimes as she is still lying down instead of sitting, when I have this sorted I will try her off the lead

well done, its all about confidence and voice, your voice is the best or worst tool you have, I can make my dog go crazy tail between his legs tucked up running round in circles going mad or he will sit ears down knowing he has done something wrong and that is all voice. When you make her sit and stay you walk away 10 paces turn and she is still sitting and you walk back and make a big fuss of her she will look forward to that, if she does something wrong and you shout that's when you get the drop to a lay, so as you return to your dog the dog does not know what will happen so on your occasion you should- make her sit, hand out say stay walk backwards and repeat the command keep going, say 5 paces stop keep the command and slowly return to your dog using the occasional "good girl" in a nice soft voice when you return to her really make a fuss stroke her keep saying good girl in a high voice run her ears etc. then slowly your building her confidence as well as training. you can do that walk away stop but call her call her and use whistle and when she comes make a fuss. so 2 exercises doing the same thing

can I just point out that you should work on the weak aspects of the dog not its strengths so if he doesn't hunt hard but retrieves well then use the dummy to get the pup to hunt and if he parks his bum when on the lead when you stop walking then that's the time to bring on the stop whistle my take on this is you are just taking what the dog has easily learnt and moving on to what you want him to do without to much fuss.o m o mind .

well said id always train a dog on its weakest things first

It's an interesting one this on the stop signal because we all come at it from a different angle but hopefully all come to the same result

I like to chain the stop signal with a energy expression from a young dog such as a retrieve or another exciting activity so the young dog knows something exciting is following , the dog will want to stop itself, it's impulse control from the inside eventually the signal just stands on it's own and something the dog will do just to work in tandem with it's it's owner

A lot of young dogs will have a problem practising control for what seems to be no good reason , a dog can't just do nothing it must be doing something , I try making the stop mean wait, if you get my drift , an a dog can wait all day if it believes something good will follow,

Best of luck with the pup
