If he went up the A19 or along Wessington Way, that would lead him to the Stadium Of Light; an easy mistake for some one not from Sunderland to make. I lived in Penshaw, couldn't get more Mackem than that, also lived in Washington and could see from my window the hill the Lampton Worm was supposed to be wrapped around, right next to the bridge over the Wear. oneredtrim 148 Posted February 17, 2014 Report Share Posted February 17, 2014 I remember Sunderland bringing at least 14k down early '90's (filled a 9k stand and had both corners/nobody did that all yr), thousands outside, they were boozing with us in the parkside, even adapting are hi yi yippie song to incorporate Newcastle The crowd was given to be 38k (think sardines), how swales kept his kite straight when the pretend att was announced only he knows, wasn't long after the inland revenue started head counting minor grounds to let the big boys know their tickle was up.. It didn't cost £35-40 to see a game! We had teams we could relate to, not players on £100,000 a week. I'ts not our game anymore, it belongs to the money men! oneredtrim 148 Posted February 17, 2014 Report Share Posted February 17, 2014 I've just been reliably informed Sunderland trumped the 91 following in the cup in 73, cause the official capacity of maine rd was a little sketchy back then the numbers are hardly scientific, though again the figure was given to be 54k with the crowd pissin themselves and pointing to the directors box.
