Anyone Make The Own Steel Snares?

Recommended Posts

Tested the cutters and the crimp last night by making up a few extensions out of 2mm 7x7 and some 2mm ferrules. The cutters where fine, easy to use and left a clean cut edge. The Ratchet crimp was fine too, used the blue terminal for the bite, and done both sides, looks tidy and seams pretty solid as is but I will write up if I get any dramas, was thinking of giving them a bash with a hammer just for peace of mind but I will see what ideas the lads come up with and try and break a few at work ;D

If it's fox snares your after, with you mentioning cable, crimping, stop ends etc I thought it would be fox snares, then don't buy woodgas DVD,it's about rabbit snares not fox snares.? If I've got the wr

Got the tools from eBay, maybe could of got them slightly cheaper but I went with a seller from the UK and went for a brand know for a good quality, buy cheap usually buy twice eh, thinking I won't need to buy them again if I look after them. Got the locks, collars and swivels from the states, there cheaper and more variety than over here but the catch is the shipping cost, me and a mate went halfers so after we split the shipping it didn't work out too bad at all, like I said earlier about reusing the parts it's an investment ;D Looking for a cheaper place to buy the end stops next time, if I could get the cable local too, that would save postage an all. Gonna order from the states again, will maybe order a shit load if I can shift a few to make up for the postage and that.

If your looking to make a few wires and need suitable hand tools then you really ought to have a look at the knippex brand.., they don't come much better....,

As for ordering from the states, well..... A lot of the components they sell are overkill for use in the uk as they generally target larger species,

The components they sell are also commonly available in the uk, its just that they re-brand certain items so they seem to be designed exclusively for snarers.

Home made dosen't have to be un- proffesional and I've seen / made much better components for a fraction of the price.

Snaring laws are changing., you now have to consider things such as in line swivels ect as they may become a legal requirement soon.

Throw away your snare shop catalogue & look to source your components elsewhere...,most are readily available from the fishing industry and others you can easily produce yourself.

Best of luck

Cheer's for the heads up, will look into knipex if I have to buy again, shame I didn't know sooner, however the draper gear was half the price, will let the forum know if they pile in so you all know to keep clear.

Aye, totally agree with the overkill, but would like to think that people have some common sense... I mean things like kill springs and they RAM power snares. Your right about the law too, locking snares, biter cam locks being a prime example.

Was looking at fishing swivels actually, might be a good shout even before it becomes actual law. Seen a lot of examples looking on some of the forums from the states, think it was on mink wires but not a hundred percent. Also thinking G.S. Waters designed fox wires with brass inline swivels?

Would really like to know where to get some cheaper end stops and ferrules...

Keep smiling, its Friday ;D

Just so you know I'm talking from experience....

When I first got interested in making my own wires I spent a lot of money importing from the states....I used company's such as the snare shop and f&t ...., I purchased every kind of lock, bench swagers and piles of extras that were, looking back, a waste of money....

Having done my homework I now use uk products and find the cost minimal, I also use several home made products that are as good if not better than any you could import.

The American stops and ferrules are fantastic.,But there overkill, there used to build wires designed for bobcats, coyote and the like and unless there applied with the correct tool they don't meet there true holding capacity or grip., that's why so many people err on the side of caution and simply hammer them flat..

There are better end stops available in the uk, there smaller, lower profile and cheaper.., with the right tool there easily applied and give a nice neat finish..

I admit., I'm no expert snarer, merely a novice but I do enjoy making my own gear so if there's anything I can help you with in relation to tools / materials then just drop me a pm.....

Heritage.

You Do, however know that the Draper tool co. are about as vehemently and actively Anti as Brian May ....?

I guess there is some delicious irony; in the fact that they're cheaper tools are making it easier for you to kill foxes.

But, this must be tempered with your payment for those cheap tools being split between Draper and the LACS.

Some sound advice Heritage, always good to hear from someone with experience, hence the reason why I intend on keeping this thread going. Will defiantly send you a message.

I bought my stops and ferrules from the UK, the shipping jumped up massively when I asked about adding them to my order from the states.

I think I know the ones your talking about, are they the 'release stops' with the set break away, the do have to be put on with a special tool?

Haha, that made me chuckle last night Outlaw P, you just carnt win eh!?

Aye definitely IanB, glad you back safe and sound, PM on route ;D

Looking for some washers now, to put on the end of the snares between the swivel and the end stop. The idea being it takes pressure away, well spreads it so the stop doesn't pull against the swivel and it helps the swivel turn. Surely there cheap enougth on eBay, the drama is not knowing the appropriate size! M6 maybe? I think an ideal size would be with a 2mm hole (thread) and a 10mm total width?

Keep smiling, it's still the weekend,

The American catalogue's actually show a dedicated "snare swivel washer"...but there's really something wrong if people have to import such simple things rather than using what's available in the uk..

There is a commercially available washer that works perfectly well with all the American swivels & I've sent you a pm with the details.

Going to get making this weekend, been playing with wire, crimping, researching size's, support and anchoring techniques, loading and preparation. Feeling pretty confident and have a few thing I want to try, wish me luck...

All the best boys,

Best of luck with the wires......

Now you've got all your components together its simply a case of straight forward assembly....

Practice putting a swan neck (or a double ) on the end of a scrap piece of wire & don't forget to work with the natural lay of the cable......

I look forward to seeing the results of all your efforts... :)

Right then boys, first batch (No excuses...) lets have some criticism :p Should never judge by looks so they say, but these will get a fair trial in the field, which am sure we can agree, counts the most.

Was thinking about having a play with different treatments (Baking soda, dip, wax, spray, ect) but lets save that for another thread eh...

All the best,
