trapperman 474
Does anyone use old engine oil to treat fence posts? I'm fed up of posts not lasting more than 4-5 years these days pressure treatment does nothing now it seems. My mate is a mechanic and I just picked up 5 gallons of old oil and can have as much more as I like, I've got an old 40 gallon drum I've cut the top off and I'm gunna soak the bottom foot or so that's going in the ground in there for a few weeks!! Have you tried this? Does it work?
smithie 2,443
i stood my fence posts in old oil for a week then let them dry off before i built my fence and i bet it was 10 years ago now. i also painted mi garden fence with it.. it stopped the kids climbing over for a bit

talt 878
My dad had a chicken shed that belonged to his grandfather that had a good coat of engine oil and creosote painted on it every year and the wood was still sound despite it being nearly years old. forest of dean redneck 11,669
When me dad changes the oil in his cars he pours it round bottom of his fence posts.also uses it underneath the cars instead of waxoil .
Lab 10,979
As said mix it 50/50 with creosote. Not sure why your pressure treated wood is only lasting 4/5 years though..??
trapperman 474
I got some posts nearly 20 years old, it's just been the last few years they are rubbish I was chatting to a fencing guy and he reckons the eu banned something in the treatment? oldmantanner 4
Yeah its great for treating fences with. We mix it up with old diesel and any old oil, we also put the soot from sweeping the chimneys in to it as well. Its basicly kreosote mate
leegreen 2,180
Add some thing to make it more easily absorbed like already said, derv, creasote, white spirit etc.

Neils 1
I treat my sheds and fences in all my engine oil, it does seem to do the trick, it is apparently bad for you tho so it might be an idea to put gloves on before you slap it all over everything! ( i haven't bothered do far and im still living!!)
