Right....... So we are led to believe the previous owner was a good enough trainer to teach a dog to hold a rabbit alive but couldn't teach the dog it's name or recall? Or is it just you that the dog

I was going to ask him the same. I am only guessing here, you have only had him a week? Edited to add, let me know who you are selling the rabbits to, a tenner per rabbit is not to be sniffed at lol.

Right....... So we are led to believe the previous owner was a good enough trainer to teach a dog to hold a rabbit alive but couldn't teach the dog it's name or recall? Or is it just you that the dog throws a deafy? From what I can guess and it's only a guess, there is only so much you can get from a description of only a couple of sentences is..... The previous owner has taught the dog f**k all. Yes, he's took it out, showed it a rabbit but the dogs pretty much taught itself. The 'taught' to hold the rabbit alive is just the dogs style, he's soft mouthed. your saying hold so does that mean he doesn't retrieve either? Now again, I'd hazard a guess that the dog not listening to a word you say is the reason why he sold it at 2. It's a prime example of why when guys on here say they are thinking of getting an adult dog, every guy on here who has been around running dogs to a man will advise a pup. But that's too late for you now. Anyway, knowing very little about the dog, when you got it, how it is with you ect.... You have 2 options. First is, if you've had the dog a couple of months, bonded with him, he recalls to you fine except when hunting, it might just be down to over excitement due to lack of work. In this case you'll need to get him out a lot, constantly working on recall even in the garden, house, field etc. Second option is and it's what I suspect, the previous owners taught him f**k all then, forget hunting this season and go back to basics. It ain't going to be easy teaching a dog who has spent 2 years doing what he wants to do into a dog doing what you want him to do but it is possible. Use rewards, treats don't use force and hopefully he should be a good dog for next season instead of the liability he is the now.

Thanks for the info. I knew the previous owner, I have hunted the dog 4 times this week and have caught 25 rabbits but when he pins the rabbit what I wanted him to d o you have to put him on the lead straight away or else he will just keep running around the field and jumping ditches. I I'm not disappointed with him but it's a bit of an in convenience

This seems to be one of the most common problems encountered with lads and their running dogs and one easily avoided

Recall trained through treats and praise is limited, in as far as when most treats and such are given the dog is usually in a neutral mindset , which means there are no distractions and the dog is not in drive,

You add distractions and the so called trained dog turns out to be throwing you the deaf ear the reason been that you have not addressed the internal conflict the dog now feels , prey items , prey scent and anything the gives the dog a Charge and fills him with excitement controls his natural inclinations, in other words the prey controls the predator and if your reading off the Dominance script the problem is you become predator like to the dog and he feels prey like and causes a state of conflict,

Put another way when a dog is infested with 200.000 volts of predator energy at the smell of a bunny , he needs to address that charge in his body and he does this by running and catching if possible the bunny which brings him back to neutral again but what's happening is you are recalling which for him is impossible because you have never been able to resolve how he feels inside , you have become predator and are the path off highest resistance meanwhile the bunny is path of lowest resistance it's a no brainier for the dog and he'll take off into the distance,

That's the problem you have at the minute and as the man said it's a difficult one the cure , the causes for it are many, keeping the lamp on after a rabbit has been chased turning him onto to another one , no original bond with former owner , lads are desperate for their dog to catch and make all sorts of f**k up,

The way a dog bonds is in Drive , it's an emotional connection , a pup will be all over ya for treats for the first 6 or so months , how many times have we heard "he fully trained to recall, sits , stays and he only 5 months old , he may do all that but at that stage like his bitch before you food is his world, but it's an illusion , sexuality brings a totally different mindset , out with the old in with the new , we find the pup is showing much more interest in everything and we find our training hits a brick wall because we can't control the excitement the pup feels inside, we have never trained in drive

A tip to young lads with pups bringing them out , bring them out on their own just the two of you , at various stages on the walk Stop the pup will want to venture ahead , hold you're ground , no recall no feck all just stand and let the pup figure out that if it wants to hunt on it must come back not because you prompted but of its own doing , it's training from the inside out. , the pup will feel it's controlling you, eventually coming back becomes instrumental with getting to hunt again ,
