Lennard 10
My dogs make a lot more yawnings/yawning noises than say the collie of my parents. On the internet there is a lot of discussion about what dogs' yawning means...stress or positive emotions, or none of both... What do you think? When do you dogs yawn? Do your terriers yawn as much as your running dogs? L. Quote Link to post

Lennard 10
Yeah...but I mean the exagerated yawn that ends with a whine...they sometimes do that when they have to wait or see things... L. Quote Link to post

weejohn 3
when my max is happy he makes noises when he yawns, i would of said it was quite normal. Quote Link to post
Neal 1,875
I've heard that it's a social thing, like a pride of lions all yawning and licking their chops when they wake up, set off hunting or return from a hunt. It can also be used as a kind of appeasement, unless I'm getting it mixed up with the licking lips. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Your on the right track there Neal: it's kind of a calming thing. If your dogs are getting agitated cos it's time for their exercise try giving a big exaggerated yawn yourself: then watch your dogs, it calms them right down. It is a good stress diffuser. Neal 1,875
Thanks Skycat, that all rings a bell. I've got a small book, more of a pamphlet really, by a woman from Scandinavia called "calming signals" but not looked at it for a few years. Quote Link to post
Eggy 0
Well you can't compare humans & dogs, but apparently in humans (quite a bit of novel research on this topic recently) is to "cool" the brain so to stay more alert in a social setting....so to prevent "dosiness" really Cheers Eggy Quote Link to post
