daz1976 8
i have a 3 and half month old 3/4 grey 1/4 saluki i know she is only still very young but she is my first running dog so not knowing alot about them except what ive read i was just wondering if it was normal at this age to be scared of other dogs,i have been walking her on her lead for about 3 weeks now and she is excellent on her lead also i let her off for a run with my collie in the fields and she recalls no problem at all and runs around with the collie but if another dog comes along she seems to be terrified is this normal Quote Link to post
Tallyho 181
JUST KEEP TAKING HER OUT ROUND OTHER DOGS, HAS SHE HAD ANY OTHER DOGS GO FOR HER, CAUSE THAT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM, Quote Link to post
daz1976 8
no other dogs have gone for her my collie has the odd grumble at her when she is in the house just showing her who is boss i think but that dont stop her harrassing him Quote Link to post
Sorley x 32
I really wouldn't worry too much. Just keep exposing her to as much as stuff as possible. Also if she acts scared then just ignore her. If you console her or comfort her then she will doi it again because you have rewarded her for showing that behaviour. It is just the same as why a lot of dogs are gun shy. Gun goes off, dog shocked owner comforts and pets dog. Before long gunshy. If you can get yourself along to some puppy classes all the better. you dog will soon be comfortabe with dogs and other people. (unless you are wanting your dog to shy away from strangers...... now where could that come i handy......) All the best. Quote Link to post

weejohn 3
i really wouldnt worry daz my lurcher is the same but is slowly getting better now. he is 18 weeks now and has been scared since i started taking him out at 12 weeks, i find max is ok with other lurchers/greyhounds but it is particularily scared of other breeds especially labs because they rush in at him. good luck with your pup Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Make sure you only expose the pup to steady strange dogs: dogs that rush up and bark or act stupid are a pain in the arse: a lot of other breeds don't have the same sensitivity as lurchers, particularly Saluki bred ones. Try and find the slow sensible sort of dog to introduce her to: I hate most pet dog owners with a vengeance as most of them haven't a clue and all they say is stupid things like: 'he only wants to play' Puppy classes are a really good idea as they get your pup socialised around other pups of similar age in a controlled environment. I hate walking my dogs where the idiots go, but for the sake of socialising the pup I take mine down the local playing fields when all the old dears are out with their little old dogs that are no threat to a pup: pays off in the long run as the pup learns to be confident around dogs. Nothing worse than a dog that is a shivering wreck around strange dogs, and they can also learn to be agressive through fear as they get older. Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
My pup was the same, now at six month she's much better and runs up to most dogs for a game. Quote Link to post
Neal 1,869
Sound advice from Skycat. She'll probably be ok but it's best to stack as much in your favour as possible by "using" sensible, steady dogs. Quote Link to post
