Lab 10,979
Lab, it's been estimated that NASA has given a ten fold return in investment through technology produced in its reach for the stars. That sounds a pretty good investment does it not? Like I said, it's not what we find on Mars but what we learn in getting there. We're very comfortable in the environment that the Earth provides us with. One day maybe millenia from now we will benefit from being comfortable in taking steps outside of this Earth. Let's be proactive and take those small steps now.......... especially if those small steps will see short term returns from their investment. Was the technology not invented to go on these missions though.? If you said we went to the moon and came back with something new and amazing then that would be worth while. Getting everything back to front these scientists...;-)

War is another thing that sees huge and rapid advancements in technology, technology that would go undiscovered otherwise.
Wildling 520
I think the major problem with Space Exploration is that it's not exactly open to the average joe blogs, looking back most of the important Sci-Fi writers of the 19th & 20th century's expected us to be up there with the moon colonised and exploring the inner and outer solar system by now. To my mind the old shuttle program with all its low earth orbit missions was half the reason the space program is in such a state now. That and to much risk aversion, FFS it's exploration it's not meant to be safe !
Huan72 687
The earth has an expiry time, the sun will engulf it one day. if humanity survives this far into the future, we will either have to have the technology to stop this or leave the planet.
