Anyone that's been around wheaten's,even briefly, knows that they are dog aggressive, same sex kennel mates(not a shared kennel)in my experience can't even be trusted with each other after a certain stage in there development, never had much trouble with dogs and bitches, except around mating time, and one bitch in particular I could only get mated once in 7 years because she was so aggressive when trying to get a dog on her. What I don't agree with is the "man-eater" tag that wheaten's still carry,I'm not saying there ain't some wheaten's still like that, but none that I've seen and I've been lucky to get around a few different kennels, when the bull-terrier cross was done way back in the seventies it created many of this type of "man-eaters" so long ago now that i would deem it irrelevant to the breed, most dogs would still carry some bull genes but are completely saturated with wheaten blood. Its not something I could go into great detail about because it all happened when I was still a twinkle in my daddies eye,so best not to comment on things we didn't see ourselves, plus there's guys on the site that could speak from being there in the time and place. It does the breed no favours too present it as such a vicious and dangerous type.

Maybe your right Danny, but look at what happened other breeds that need a firm hand when they fell into the pet brigade.

Like I've said before, the wheaten was probably safer when it was in the hands of the few that know the breed than the many that think they know the breed.

Still though, financially there'd be many's a lad happy to see the popularity of the breed.

I understand what you mean Neil, but there's plenty of Wheaten's out there suitable for pet owners, they've been doing well at cruft s for years and virtually indistinguishable(in looks) from the type we know. Like a Thai bird I used to know would say, same same but different. Wheatens are really only a one trick pony, good for f**k all else,a nuisance really with low level intelligence,a farm dog,but no fcukin Collie,so I personally don't see the attraction for pet owners to be drawn to that type.

Liam he doesn't bother with the digging at all,but he still enjoys abit of ferreting an getting into the countryside,he told me to say he was asking after you.

Yeah Liam that team were always getting into scrapes and we were always getting dragged around with them, loved that as a kid. We were at a birthday party the other week and there were some cracking stories getting told, a guy who comes on here, was trying to get started with the dogs and was always torturing them to go out lamping and digging so they told him he could come lamping this evening,"don't worry bout wellies just wear something warm",so they picked him up,arrived at the spot, and out comes the freshly painted white gloss wellies and a high viz vest, the header wore them,or the time mad dooner smacked one of the bandsmen after the show in Tandragee and nearly got them filled in,lol. Think the Craic was nearly as important to them as the sport, well, some of them.

There were mad times for sure Danny, tell him Tom C is still hale and hearty as is Frank C and family, we often have a laugh about when the lads used to come down,we kept a lot of strong dogs then.Them dogs were over and back over the border more than the diesel smugglers.

Anyone remember the weight pulling one year (one of the last) where 2 dogs pulled equal weight but there was no more building blocks left so a child was put on top.

One dog pulled with the child on top, one didn't.

It was a great show with dog men coming from Cork, Limerick, Wales, England and Holland most years.

They were happy days and never an argument over a ribbon.

Like I say, the wheaten class was just that, class.

I don't think anyone in those days kept a wheaten for anything other than what they were bred for.

Am I right in thinking Neil you feel their work is best consigned to the past?

Not a dig (excuse pun), just rung a bell from a previous thread
