davedavedave 69
Hi Chaps, I know a few of the lads on here have already done this but I managed to catch my first mole today with my bare hands as he ran through a tunnel I had just opened. I was lucky as I saw the soil move so was ready for him. The old chap told me he missed one years ago in the same situation so nice to go one better than him. Also my daughter was on her first mole catching job with me and witnessed the event. She now thinks I do it all the time - lol !! atb, Dave. 3 Quote Link to post
Outlaw Pete 2,224
I've flipped them out of the earth before now, using a big knife. I also once grabbed one as it scuttled across a road side verge. That one bit me like a bitch and absolutely quelled any further interest in ever touching a live mole with my bare hands again! You were lucky, Dave ..... Not to get bitten! 1 Quote Link to post
davedavedave 69
I should have added I did have gloves on so the "bare hands" was a figure of speech as I know their saliva has toxins in which paralyse earthworms plus the soil is full of nasty stuff. Quote Link to post

Matt 160
Hi Chaps, I know a few of the lads on here have already done this but I managed to catch my first mole today with my bare hands as he ran through a tunnel I had just opened. Also my daughter was on her first mole catching job with me and witnessed the event. She now thinks I do it all the time - lol !! atb, Dave. I've done it a few times.... the most rewarding occasion was when I saw one being attacked by a magpie on the road. I pulled up and grabbed the mole and relocated it to the garden of a customer that owed me £2k. When he rang complaining about the mole on his lawn I refused to go until he paid me the money he already owed me. When he paid, I refused to attend because he was a bad payer... The little buggers sure make some noise, and have very sharp teeth. My little terrier comes with me on the trap rounds and got bitten by one as a youngster. She now grabs any mole (dead or alive) and gives it a rapid shake to make sure they aren't going to bite her again! Quote Link to post
Outlaw Pete 2,224
I've been bit by a field mouse once mate, what's a mole like ? I've been bitten by a field vole, and that's probably on a par with apodemus. It's just a sharp pinch that ye wouldn't choose to invite. Bloody mole though? Little shits have got a right set of cutlery in there, and they're not shy about using it either! It's probably best likened to a young ferret. Bloody painful and bloody bloody! Going back to voles though; I kept one in a fish tank, in my bedroom, when I was a kid. Endearing little thing. I used lay there, watching its activities for hours. Much later in life, on holiday and bored, it occurred to me, in the very early hours, that another pet vole might prove fun. There and then, I walked out the door in search of one. As I said above; Their bite isn't something ye'd choose to invite a second time. I took a pair of Northern Ireland gloves with me. Whipped up this bit of tin. Flash of brown and a hissing scream (?! 'The f**k?!?) Of course, my reflexes were so fast, I snatched it up and had the box lid shut before I could even think about it. Once home, I emptied my captive into a makeshift cage. A simple box with a weld mesh lid. And the f**king thing hissed and screamed at me. Then, lept up at the mesh and starting gnawing on it viciously, all the time emitting this f**king scream! If I'd had a gun? I'd have shot it. As it is, I seem to remember the bloody thing was just dead in a day or two anyway. Probably died of rabies. Or just sheer hatred! F**king scared me, it did! burnie69 376
My 8 year old got bitten this time around by a field vole. We was taking rearing sheds down and they take refuse under the floors. Some have 5-6 under them every time he saw one he would try his hardest to catch one. This particular day he manage to hold one under his foot and pick it up by its tail anyway in the process he got bitten on the palm of the hand. Obviously being his dad it was my fault and I didn't get spoken to for the rest of the day. Quote Link to post
