morton 5,368
Me and a mucker used to work a few days to enable us to have funds to hunt a week or two, then work again. We plastered a double cellar out for a couple of Seihks from Leeds,£600 was owed,we said we,d take cash plus their escort van,a few days later they arrived with an old Austin A35,in the early ,s the car was vintage, they tried telling us the motor was worth the work we put in,at best it was a £40 motor.A few harsh words, with the emphasis their headwear would make useful bandages for their injury,s etc,we walked away with £280 a vintage motor and the inner feeling of contentment, possibly because the Seihks did not yet know we,d trashed one of the ceilings. That motor took us all over the Fens,Dales and A1 for the next 6 months,it ran on fumes and was the most reliable pile of shite we had the pleasure of hunting in,not one tug in that motor, sadly wrecked when my mucker tried towing a motor in snow and pulling half the back end off it,i shed a tear for its demise. morton 5,368
We bought a Ford Escort Mexico, tuned to the bollocks, useless for carrying mutts in but faaasst.Corsing hares around the A1 and dodging the boys in blue we made our rapid escape one sunny sunday morning, leaving the A1 at Wetherby with blue flashing lights a distant view, heading towards Harewood at 110 miles an hour, bonnet released itself of its quick release straps and and we ended in a ditch on the roof, dogs and owners attempting hasty exit to be met by the pursuers, another fine and a wrecked motor, fecking hares. 4 Quote Link to post

Silversnake 1,099
Very interesting read, the ban really is a shame. I know very little on the topic but a lot of you old boys did A LOT of poaching. If we take dogs on to private land here the farmers shoot the dogs and if we got caught by the police dogs and vehicles are confiscated and even worse trouble if we have guns. I wonder do local communities/shires support the ban over there or is instigated by federal politicians? I hope the ban gets lifted for the sake of your dogs if nothing else. Thanks for the thread cocker Quote Link to post

TOMO 26,435
Great pics them cocker,,,..love the the old caravan,,,, what ever happened to travelers putting that Crome on trailers,,,don't see it now,,,,the other thing travelers do,,, is never take the plastic of the seats,,, could never understand that one...must of been all sweaty ,,,, Morton I had to google an image of an Austin a35.... Mind I know what the a40 looked liked cos we had one rusting on our drive for a few years,,,, my old man thought he could make extra cash doing old motors up and forgoing them,,,,,even as a young lad of 10 in the 70,s I knew it was a waste of time,,,, cos the old man was useless at mechanics ,,,,me mam put her foot down in the end,,, and made him clear the drive,,, of the 5 cars,,, that we're rusting away on our drive,,,,lol 1 Quote Link to post

sandymere 8,263
Woking dogs, racing dogs, terriers, was a different world in the 70's and 80's An old morris van and little responsibility. Edit to add the tale..... Looking back it was a different world, some good dogs and good men or is that just the rose tinted glasses of time. I started in the 60's with a terrier chasing bunnies through the brambles in our local wood and began my obsession with running dogs with a whippet x collie in the 70's. The chalk quarries of Bedfordshire afforded our sport with dogs, ferrets and airguns and chasing rabbits was just what kids did in them days. Next in the late 70’s early ’s, I lived in Ipswich and whilst on a job in Newmarket bought I a little rough coated fawn smutt, about 22”, from a fella after watching his dogs run one afternoon. That lurcher and I in an old Morris van went all over Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire; although in truth think the van spent as much time broken down by the side of the road as it did on it, we lived for hares. I got chased occasionally by a landowner but it never seemed a big deal and even when caught it was just a get off my land type thing rather than police helicopters like today. After thatt I lived in Northants and was a permit trainer at Henlow greyhound stadium racing there and other tracks around the south east of England, I lamped with a little Beddy/whippet x collie /greyhound that I got from Far cotton, last pic. The next move was to W/Sussex where he was joined by a deerhound hybrid along with a saluki cross as I revisited my love of coursing spending my spare time running hares on the south downs. I had some times, met good and bad but other than the odd bad accident that left dogs injured or worse I loved every minute of watching my dogs run, be in the field or on the track. A lot of years a lot of dogs but I still get that thrill when a dog is making up the ground and the chase is on! Edited February 18, 2014 by sandymere 5 Quote Link to post
