Daz39 962
After an aborted night out with Mac that never happened, Matt asked me down to his last night, but I was on “child duty” so wouldn’t be free until the wife rolled in at lord knows what time. I sat watching my phone, pinging Mac and Matt to see how they were getting on and it was driving me mad. So, I got changed into my camo gear and sat waiting for her who must be obeyed. Mac had been round earlier and donated a game bag to me, given I’m wrecking my back carrying all the rabbits these days . My wife had made Mac a scarf, doing her bit for help the aged and that, so he went of with a shooting mag, some shoot n c targets I’d picked him up and a scarf, and I had a new game bag, well, I had to go fill it, would be rude not to! The better half rolled in around midnight and I was out like a shot, up to work. The weather had been clear all day and sods law, it started to rain when I got up there. I still scared 3 rabbits of when I pulled up at the security gate, so all was not lost. I decided to take a drive round to see if I could shoot out of the car. The first 2 on the lawn legged it but I turned the lights off and pulled up about 20 yrds away from a third. So now I understand why people get the little toy carbines, trying to swing my FULL LENGTH round in the car, lordy. Still, I lobbed the business end out of the window, and POP, rabbit 1 nice head shot, no more than 20 yrds and I’d not got out of the car yet! I pulled round to the next bit of the lawn and had a couple of shots at 3 rabbits, missed the lot of em, and was quite narked at how difficult it is to use my weapon in a tight box of a car. I dumped the car and had one last scan of the front lawn before going round the back. I noticed an eye in some low branches and went on one knee to have a pop. The first shot split a twig, so I decided to move a bit closer and try again. The rabbit kindly sitting still for me to re-position. This time, I took a 25 yrd standing shot to get a better view of the rabbit, and with one backwards somersault, down went number 2. 10 mins in and the game bag was filling nicely. I went round the back and remembered to scope the rifle in at 33yrd and off I went. I managed to scare off a pair of rabbits sat in the bike shed “oooh eerrr” and they made me jump as much as I did them. I then turned a corner to see a rabbit sat 5 yrds away, couldn’t get the rifle up quick enough and he was away too. He spooked a couple more about 60 yrds away and I thought all was lost. I took a shot at another one but clipped a bit of wire directly in front of the rabbit, lucky sod. Further round I spotted a rabbit sat on the road, so I hunched down and sidled up to an IBC container. Rather than pop my head above it (as in the old days), I snook a hand onto the side, poked the barrel round and took a lovely 32 yrd head shot with a tidy back flip. 3 down, 30 mins in. That is when things went a bit wrong. The rain came down, the wind picked up, I was suffering from steamy scope, rain splashed glasses and all manner of visual impairments. I decided to pull the car up with the boot facing the lawn round the front, open the boot and shoot out of the back. I sat for 30 mins with nothing happening and was about to get out and walk again when I spotted some eyes in the tree line. On with the lamp, line up the eye and pop, number 4 down with a paced 38 yrd head shot again. Given I am selling the rabbits to the butcher, the head shots are imperative. I had one last look round the back but the rain and wind made it impossible. Watched one shot move by a good foot with the wind. I decided to jack it in and go clean the rabbits. When I got back to the front, (I’d left the car there) a rabbit was busy sheltering by the side of the car. I couldn’t shoot it because of the security fence between me and it but it made me think that I dry car is better than a wet steamy scope! 4 more in the bag, that’s 24 in 4 visits and time to talk to Mr HSE bloke about bringing a buddy down again. The rabbits went to the butcher who said he had sold my last 4 in 1 hour the previous weekend! Get in, kids can have pocket money this week! The old girl (The HW100 not the wife) has been working hard, so she is currently in bits enjoying a hot walnut oil massage. The wife walked past and said “that gun gets more love and attention than I do”, so you’ll have to excuse me lads, time to go dribble some hot walnut oil on our lass. :tongue2: 6 Quote Link to post
