Moel 18
Pete I live in a very similar Welsh building and god it was a damp and dirty sh@thole when we moved in. River sand and lime are much much better for random stone/rubble walls than Portland cement as they let the building breath, is it rendered on the outside and if so what with? I can't tell you how much better our place was when I blasted off the thick peeling non breathable oil based masonary paint some w@nker had coated it in and limewashed it instead, was a different building inside by the time summer had dried it out and has remained dry and damp free. If I were you before I did any insulating I'd open up that fireplace, sweep the chimney, test it and stick in a cheap gas bottle wood burner, add some ventilation in the door or the wall (think bloody big drill bit and pipe for those walks), heat the room and it'll be a different place. I'm bloody jealous, love renovating old places 'properly' using traditional methods, old building....old methods and materials. Regards Moel
Outlaw Pete 2,224
Jesus, Stig; That EH stuff was some chilling reading! Did ye read it? F**king incredible! Right, so out the window goes absolutely Any ideas about slapping foam bats all over the f**king walls then. That's not how my place was made to work. Thanks for that. I see that wood fibre stuff is breathable though? Hold that thought. I'll come back to that sort of thing. Just to say though; Sadly, there's no grants for me, mate. When I bought this place, everyone was going on about getting a grant for this. Grant for that. Have the whole place done up on government grants. But, that's not my way. So, I lived in a place many squatters wouldn't have accepted, for three years or more. No f**king windows in half the rooms! Any that did exist were rotten as pears. I hammered a bit of corrag' flat and nailed that inside this rooms window hole. To stop the Dogs getting out! Anyway, that was back then. Now ~ entirely out of my own pocket ~ I have gorgeous and top quality double glazing throughout. (Not a trace of white f**king UPVC to be seen!) I have a small (as big as I need) but breathtakingly ornate and equally expensive stove, in here. And we're all as warm as toast and dry as bones. In fact? That little room is the only one like it in here. Not even the earth floored room is like it. And, it all boils down to that sealed up f**king fire place! No Ventilation. Room's breathing in. Then it's unable to breathe back out again. Anyway, govt's now on the rape and pillage trail. Grants? What? Them give You anything?! You Must be f**king joking!!! So; Nor did I get a grant towards panelling out my doorways. Did all that myself too. And paid for it. I'd show ye pictures. But, this isn't the Ideal Homes f**king thread! Buy these packs of 3" wide, wafer thin, tongue and groove planks. F**kin' brilliant, they are! Few roof batons to the wall and pin these f**kers to them. Buy a pack as ye can afford it and get some more done. Then, trim it off with a bit of bull nosed skirting and concave quadrant and it looks f**king great! Authentically traditional too Now, I can't help thinking; That sort of thing's said to bring warmth to a room, isn't it? Not sure how. But they say that. Thing is, the walls could still breathe through it (If ye use the right paint) I'd love to do that. And have wood fibre boarding behind it. I just can't afford it now. Spent all my money getting as far as I have. That said? I don't think I could afford all that boarding. Dunno. Can't help thinking the panelling though would not only breathe. I would also take the brunt of any damp air which would otherwise come straight in and find my cages and canaries first. Much food for thought in all this!
stealthy1 3,964
If I were you Pete, I'd invest in a tiled roof and wall vents, its a bit of coin to lay out, but it will solve all your problems, and see you out
Outlaw Pete 2,224
Random stone is usually filled with rubble in the middle all manner off Shiite was used as fill. They are again usually thick walls. Yep. I have similar walls which I've look into. Out buildings I've knocked bits off of. F**king glass bottles and all sorts in there! Mad f**kers must have thrown just about what ever was at hand into those cavities. Anything to just fill that f**ker. My cottages walls are eighteen inches thick. Oh! And, I need a five inch hole bored through one. To vent a new stove I have here. Any idea how that can be done, GTE? We needed a two inch hole, got the new sinks waste pipe? Took me nearly a f**king week to clear it! Drilled it. Punched a bar through it. Withdrew the bar and a load of shit dropped down. Plucked and scraped that out? Load more dropped! And, that was me, well amused, for days on end! Tap the wall, six foot above that pipe now? Probably end up with a vertical slot, running all the way down! F**k all left in there! Not trying that shit with a Five inch hole!

Not trying that shit with a Five inch hole! Might be easier getting twin wall flue pipe and going up and out the roof Pete.. Don't think you're going to get a 5 inch hole in that without taking the wall apart in the area you want to put the pipe and building it back round it..
Outlaw Pete 2,224
Pete, just go and either buy or build a decent shed ..... I tend to agree, mate. It would be, if was going to try and go down the road of Kingspan and plaster type methods. As it is? I simply can't afford either. Never will be able to now. I have a f**king great cow shed to re roof this summer. I'll be flat broke then The hope of being able to get a couple of birds in, at the end of it all, would be a lovely little treat for me to look forward to. I'm absolutely convinced venting that room will sort it. Couple of tenners on nice vent grills. Or couple of K on causing the exterior walls to crumble and collapse with retained moisture. Taking half the f**king roof with it. I know which route I'm trying!

You want to put the hole through first to stabilise it the hire a hilti drilling rig and core drill it.
the_stig 6,614
read some of it pete to much information in one hits no good for me i fooking forget half of it interesting stuff --- your cages are going on the back wall? could you just do the back wall and a bit more than the depth of the cages for starters then tackle the rest later ---as for the floor my lads just done his conservatory floor 3x2 battons loft insulation in between then chipboard sheets and finished off with laminate flooring done on the cheap.. Outlaw Pete 2,224
Might be easier getting twin wall flue pipe and going up and out the roof Pete. Are you scarfing down Clear Vision pills, or something, tonight, mate? That shit's not cheap, I'll grant ye. But, nor would be hiring some maniac to take on the wall job. And that would have still led to a rather nasty little job of running an off set, external flue, and so forth. Quite honestly? That's why I've rather left this one on a back burner for a few years now. Scared to death of it! Now that ye've actually pointed out the alternative though? Poking a hole through the roof ~ and then making good with a clean scrap of iron and some Black Jack, or what ever, Does seem a cake walk! I see GTE suggests " Grouting " and a Hilti? 'Core Drill'? Is that what they call them? I've heard about these things. Seems they have f**k off great big ones for boring under roads with? Yeppers. As said though; Going through the wall would lead to all sorts of dramas. At the time I thought of all this, I had a mate who was brilliant at welding, metal fabrication and engineering. He could have knocked up any and all sorts of brackets, to support my external flue. He's no longer available. I can well see it turning into an absolute f**king nightmare! By comparison? Punching a hole through the roof? I can do that!
