boblikesguns 6
I've lived in 3 houses over several years with my air rifles and never had any problems, I've been in my new house around a year and recently my guns have started rusting.I keep them in a locked cupboard with ventalation holes in my bedroom, its fairly warm and its not damp. the rust is fine and dotty, i'm gonna wash the outside with wd40, and get some gun oil for the barrel, is their anything else I need to do?I cant take the guns out as I live in a rented house, so need to "rust proof" the cupboard, not sure whats causing it though, I thought rust needed damp conditions? any advise on whats causing it would be a big help as would advise on preventing future rusting. Many thanks, Bob Love Guns Quote Link to post
Cushty mush 95
You can get a damp sachul preventer for gun safes Which will last about 6 months off that action site. Not sure of the name do a google searchOr even get some humidifier box from your local pound shop there grate you'll see how bad the damp is when how much water is in itHope this helps Quote Link to post
twymanc 135
theres moisture trapping the area where you keep your guns pal especially if you come back from shooting the metal is very cold and as soon as it hits humidity ie heating been on etc it draws to it like a magnet i normally let my guns climatise for about an hour before i wipe them down with an oily rag it happens so quick and it is just surface rust but i had the same problem it was weird atb craig 1 Quote Link to post

Newlife2 55
I might put a low wattage bulb in there and leave it on, this will disipate the humidity.. Edited February 10, 2014 by Newlife2 Quote Link to post

Wildling 520
If your storing them long term then a fine coating of oil on all metal parts wont hurt, make sure that after handling you give the metal work a rub down first as your sweat is slightly acidic and will cause corrosion to occur faster.
