Guest Robbie Morran
I was at Wolsingham show today [cock of the north ] I was watching the lurcher final ,i coulnt belive the dog that won best in show , it had to be fixed , the dog wasnt a bad sort but far from the best looking dog in the show........ I thought dogs were judged on confirmation and condition , this dog looked flat to me , the last four dogs all looked smooth to me, I no the lad who won the show and i get on with him , so this is not a personal dig ,and i dont show my dogs ... Does any one els think shows are fixed , i no its the same people who go to the shows and its very clicky .... I no this will get a few backs up but thats just the way it will have to be ....... Guest Doug
Some judges are straight, some not. You soon get to know the ones that know how to judge a working dog. Quote Link to post
pat blewitt 41
I think its just down to the judge on the day everyone thinks their dogs are the best looking in the show or they wouldnt bother putting them in. I dont know if there are any standards that the judges work to, I think not , because each show I've been to has been judged differently, but then again its not feckin crufts is it, you pay yer pound and take yer chance. doxhope 2
You think lurcher shows are bad, you should try showing at Kennel Club shows. Yes it can happen that some shows are fixed, and its a real downer when it happens, I hate it :realmad: :realmad: people are now travelling vast distances to show lurchers, terriers and even ferrets, everyone deserves a fair crack of the whip, Ive judged over 30 lurcher shows over a 20 year period, if I have any failings being a cheat is not one of them Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
why worry about it robbie? Lurcher and terrier shows are just a beauty contest really, and everyone knows looks dont fill the freezer. I have some of the ugliest dogs in Scotland that would get laughed out of a showring, but they have served me well, and thats all that matters. Bodies in the bag is what counts, bodies in the bag Quote Link to post
Guest Keeps
I was at Wolsingham show yesterday but didn't get to see the Cock of the North finals, so I can't comment on that. I saw the general lurcher show that followed and the standard of dogs was very high, I wouldn't have liked to have been the one who had to choose a winner. The judge (don't know if it was the same one) had a difficult job; he can't please everyone and at the end of the day picks the dog that he likes the most. I do believe he is a Moocher himself and may even be on here :11: Quote Link to post

Guest lazylurchers
Well, its even worse being a female trying to show lurchers! You are not treated seriously and have to put up with all the sexist remarks from the commentator! At the Dundee show two years ago, my old bitch was beaten in one class by a particular dog, then she was placed above it in the next class. The judge turned to the dogs owner and appologised saying he just wanted to give the lass a chance! :realmad: I agree with you Mik about that judge on Saturday. Never touched my Beardie X, asked if she was looking for someone outside the ring and then went on to say Beardies are intelligent dogs but add bit of Grey and they lose it! Would have been aswell leaving the ring then! Quote Link to post
Guest HAWKEYE
The same lad wins all the cumbrian shows with 2 lovely looking deerhound xs has done for years, strange thet never have a mark on them from one year to the next..... I like a show me, Good days out with a cold beer tio meet old frinends and talk dogs ....whats better on a lazy summer day ? Quote Link to post
doxhope 2
Hey Mik, thats some length that dog of yours, was the show the Fife and Kinross, I was going to go to that, were you at Moffat the other week. Dosny look shy to me, very alert Quote Link to post
roache 0
Does it all really matter? I was at Wolsingham with a mate and his 7 year old daughter, she had never met my dog Sid yet took him in the ring twice, young handler, and under 23" rough. She got 2nd out of two but more importantly got two rosetes and an experience she enjoyed and will always remember. Me and her dad had a couple of beers, isn't that what it's all about ? Roache P.S the judge had a hard job and never stopped all day. Quote Link to post
Gin 498
I know from some of the photos of the show, that Lesley Fenton was judging some of the Lurchers,- she is very honest when it comes to judging the dogs, and will have put the best first,- in her opinion. It just depends on the judge on the day and what he goes for in his opinion being best. Quote Link to post

Guest dakersgazad
ok this ent about judging really, coz i think every judge has their favourite cross of lurcher and it can be hard going imho , but this is about some of the idiots that attend lurcher shows the "rosette hunters" :11: , i was at the shropshire a week last and got chatting to this old bird in one of those mobility scooters we were talking about the simulated coarsing when she comes out with "simulated coarsing is the ultimate test of skill for a lurcher" i was like "oi, r u for real for gads sakes"? i just said to her "how can it b"? running round a fecking ring in front of the public nah the real test is when ur out on the fenns and ur mutt is chasing a good winter hare in its own environment thats the ultimate test!!" she said "oh yeh i agree i work mine on hares" at this point i was like how the fook do you work ur dog ur stuck in that scooter your dogs a fat cnut got a back like a table and not a single scar on it!! so basically i was fooking fuming :realmad: an walked off, :11: stupid fooking people!! but nah i generally enjoy going to dog shows meeting new folk an having a gud bit crack with everyone but you always get one or two.... cheers :11: Quote Link to post
Guest LEARNER
THERE,is i,m afraid a lot off favouritism at lurcher shows, and its not just showing, i was a member of the NLRC, for many years ,and what i saw there ,was enough to make you spew, but one thing i will say , everyone has a right to do what they want , with thier lurcher, and i know for a fact ,there as been some raving beauties, win these shows ,that are has good a worker , as any lurcher you,ll have the grace to see, i know because i have gone out with 2 lads for sure, that had show winners, and thier dogs took the lot, thier where scars on these dogs ,but they were rough coated ,so perhaps a lot were never seen, anyway they were crackers, there,s no doubt ,that most off the show winners ,have never worked, but its like anything ,in a beauty contest ,the pretty one,s mostly win ,just look at the miss world contest ,could you see ,a young girl winning ,that with crooked or black teeth , short legs , a scar on the mush ,and other places ,well thats what a lurcher show is , and we hope the best looking dog wins ,well the owners do, so just take it with a pinch off salt , has long has your dog works ,why worry about it.
