I kid you not mate, the last 5 or so of those could have been of my old man and his workmate 10-15 years ago! They've gone too old for that shit now, thankfully! :D

Abit like that at work for me even though not at all like the building game. Have birds come around and tell us the correct way to lift a 20stone dead body. They've never been hands on or done sod all to do with our job. Simply got a degree in business or something or another and sits behind a desk.

I'm sure kids can't even play conkers these days? Guess gone are the days of coming home covered in bruises. Looking back now me and my mates would start of play fighting but jus end up kicking the shit out of each other lol.

When I worked on the rigs in the North Sea we used to get safety audits all the time because it was warm and dry in our cabin and they didn't have to deal with the p**staking from the roughnecks and roustabouts. Worked on a Shell rig where they decided to ban all knives, they confiscated everything like leathermans etc. We used to have to splice paper logs together and we we forced to have to go to the companyman to ask for a 'cutting tool' every time we wanted to do this.

When someone was spotted cutting a bread roll towards his hand with a bread knife they put out a tannoy saying if this was seen to happen again they would take away all the knives from the galley. We got done because we were working at height (6ft) installing some equipment because we didn't have a harness on but there was nothing to clip a harness on to.

The last straw for me working in the UK was when I was on a rig off Norwich and some flat pack shelving arrived off the chopper. The two guys were struggling to bring it inside so I offered to help them. The next day in the meeting this got brought up, I thought someone was going to thank me because we were service personnel and didn't have to help, instead I was told off for getting involved in an 'operatio' without having being through the safety talk before hand

a lot of the shit we get from employers/schools/councils etc isnt actually legal directives from h&s but because the schools are totally paranoid about being sued if there is an accident. so for example conkers have never been legally banned, just one or two headmasters got a bit twitchy. if bosses/councillors etc actually had the confidence to say they will simply enforce legal requirements and for the rest of it employees can take care of themselves, it would make life a lot easier. for example, one job i was on a few years ago we were cleaning down some barns with pressure washers, blasting detergent through them. one lad asks for a mask because he doenst like the chemicals, next thing everyone on the job has to wear a full chemical suit, gas mask the lot. and it was summer so you can imagine how uncomfortable it was. no legal obligation, just the boss shitting himself in case the chemicals affected us (they ere actually completely non-toxic, just soap really)
