What Is Your Best Memory, Of Hunting

About 18 years ago i was asked by my uncle who owned the family farm to head to the field which was in the centre of the village that we rented out to some horse folk for grazing, the local vilagers had been complaining the rabbits were eating the veg they had planted, i was told to let the folks know who we rented the fields to. so when a good windy dark night came up i rang mrs arse ! and left a message on her anwser phone, around 10pm i started lamping and the rabbits were easy one after another great i thought, after emptying the first field i went in the next and as i crossed the water tank i saw a torch heading my way, so having nothing to hide i switched on the the lamp so i could be seen seconds later this stuck up bitch (mrs arse) yelled out what are you doing on MY ground, catching rabbits i said, well i own this ground so your poaching she came back with, no hellos here!! oh sorry i replied i didnt know my uncle had sold it you lol!! i knew he hadnt! oh said mrs arse well you could of let me know, i replied i did have you not listened to the message i left i asked? no she said at this point she was looking proper silly so she said to me you better watch my dog which was a great big german shepherd it killed a dog last week at that very second it put its nose over the cattle drinker to bite my dog in a flash astra my collie grey bull grey gave it one on the muzzle leaving me to say as you can see it can look after its self i left pissing myself!

A difficult question but looking back I suppose a day where I was let down by a bloke I was doing a bit with and my dogs saving the day.

We were supposed to be out with the terriers but a better offer for him seen me waiting for most of the morning at home. Aggrieved by the let down, I put my two half crosses, Tess & Buck in the back of the car and headed to a wood where we had taken a few foxes with the terriers earlier in the season. Part of it was a look to see what was there and part of it was because that’s where we were due to end up that day but mostly it was just to get out!

It was an old wood, ancient trees and plenty of impenetrable brambles. I scouted round for earths and found the ones that we had dug before but nothing looking promising and nothing new. The dogs were keen though, scent lay everywhere, so I decided to let ‘em have a mooch, whilst I sat on a fallen tree and took stock of who I should be going out with in future!

There is something quite primitive when you see dogs working hard on a scent, sets you in a better frame of mind, quite beautiful and fulfilling and for the first time that morning something good was happening.

I must have been sat for around five minutes and the dogs were out of sight when I heard one of the dogs pace quicken behind me, thought it had put a bunny into the bramble but the crashing changed to thuds and I stood and walked to see what it was. About 30 yards in front of me was Tess, on her way back, with a fox! I was well chuffed and was just about to call her to let her know my location when another fox crept out of the bramble to my right, I stood stock still against a tree as it nervously went past. Then another, this time from behind and up toward Tess who was trying to pick her way back through the cover, it turned off before she seen it and all I could think of is where the flaming hell Buck could be! Good enough though, thinks I and stood out from the tree, giving Tess a ‘yick’ to let her know my location and she brought her prize back. Now where the hell is that dog?

I re-traced my steps back the way we came, Tess at my side, fox in hand and made it back to the main path. There on the path was Buck lying next to a very dead fox, with one of those big dopey smiles on his face!

I’ve certainly had bigger tallies in my time and seen some very special runs, with this episode I didn’t see a run at all but the satisfaction of what was a ‘let down’ day really turn into something good and all thanks to my dogs was really something special for me.

Has any of you had stange encounters, or weird encounters what you

cant explain, me and a friend was lamping on a heath one night

we had caught a couple of rabbits, when we had to cut through a wooded

footpath which was about a few minutes walk, well we are walking along

this bita path when a bout 30 yards into the wood to our left what looked

like a quick flash of a torch, and we both see this, i said to my mate did

you see that steve, and instantly, he said yeah like a quick flash of light.

well i shone the lamp to where we saw that light, and there was nothing

or no one there, and to say it put a chill down my spine is an understatement.

It frightened the pair of us, just seemed strange,,, we put a right pace down and jogged on..

we have been back along that same path through that wood, and its quite spooky

have any of you had things happen to you that you cannot explain while out

lamping....

Yep, this one will have people thinking. Me and a mate was lamping some local fields to us. A long lane with fields either side with hedgerows too tall to see over. Well we was keeping to the hedge as this is where the bunnys run to when we heard a car coming down the lane, so we turned the lamp off and got down as we thought it might be old bill. Anyways we could hear the car coming slowly down the lane and come to a stop literally on the other side of the hedge to us, heard the car door open, then foot steps as if they was wearing boots, then the car door closed again but didn't drive off. After 5-10 minutes I said to my mate f**k it they know we're here they must be waiting for us lets just have a look. So we walk to the gate look out onto the road and there's no car. We both agreed there was no way it could have drove off without us hearing as it was metres away from us. Sent a chill down our spines and we soon headed home. Lamped the same place a few times since and there's always strange things happening but never as strange as that night.
