.308

Hi all I'm looking to buy a.308 thinking of either a Remington 700 or steyr classic. I wouldn't want to shoot game much over 150yds any thoughts on these two rifles.

Hi Dave I'm a complete novice with fac having only just got my fac certificate. From the reveiews I've read both are great guns but the remington is a lot cheaper.

Why .308 if only shooting out to 150 yards?

Love my Howa 1500 in 243

Hi Dan I have a trip to South Africa booked & .308 is the minimum round required. I stalk here using a .243 I think the best chance of a clean kill is with a shot taken within 150yds. If you can't get closer than 150yds to a beast your're not stalking IMO

As said above Howa 1500 is a good gun. Don't forget the good old Tikka T3 either.

I see Dave. I understand them wanting .308 as a minimum calibre.

 

Ive been looking at the howa 1500, sako 85 and Tikka T3 in .243 for Fox and deer.

Another choice might be .30-06 if they allow it (no reason not to as .308 is a necked down .30-06, but I'd check).

 

.30-06 is an excellent deer round. More recoil but slightly more power than .308 so maybe slightly more suited to Africa I would have thought. Accuracy is very similar.

Thanks lads, I think I'm getting a message here I will have a look at the Howa 1500. Alsone I value your opinion but I have 308 on my ticket, I just haven't got the stamina to tackle the firearms officers.

The Howa is a good gun, so is the Remington, CZ, Tikka, Sako, Etc, etc.

My .308 happens to be a Remington 700SPS Stainless and works, straight out of the box, all I have done is chop about 3" (75mm) off the barrel.
