breaking dogs to ferrets

Recommended Posts

is this normal i let the terrier off the lead today i got him to sit and put the ferret on the floor and let the ferret run around him under very very close supervision and he watches the ferret and after about 3 mins he starts to wonder off is that good or bad?

I'd say good cos a dogs attention span is limited if the dog was over interested in the ferret it would probably be to kill it if he's wondering off it means that he's used to ferrets and see's them no different to anything else ie you or another dog,how many terriers would do you know would sit around for approx three mins and stay fixed on an object it was used to seeing, now if he was trying to get at the ferret or was being overly interested then the problem would be greater as he'd have more pressing buisiness to deal with, not many dogs would show great interest in something they did'nt wanna despatch now my lurchers are broken to ferrets, but have always kept a disstance from them naturally weary id put it,there are exeptions where some dogs dote on ferrets but an amazing ammount of time has been put into theese relationships,so id say good, coney always be careful because one mistake can be dissasterous but all in all id say you were doindg the right thing!! :good:

Easiest way is to put down a bowl of milk and allow them to drink from it together obviuosly watching the terrier closely ............ most of all the dog needs to be familiar with the ferret and realise that it's a working companion not fair game ;)

I would say you've got good progress there mate just keep it up and keep an eye on the terrier at all times until your sure they are ok together  :good:

Well done coney you got it cracked i reckon, just keep goin the way you are and be wary, dont give the terrier a chance to spoil all ypur hard work you probably wont get any hassle now but be on your guard :good::good:

Got no problems with the dogs, its the ferrets i cant trust......how do you stop them biting the dogs cos the dogs will not tolerate being bitten. As soon as they are near anything furry (including the tops of my slippers :11: ) they immediately sink their teeth in

MOLL.

luckily i dont have that prob though they do nip the dog but it dont seem to bother him

Mine view ferrets as a larger rat you see, so they will never be 100% safe with them, and being bitten would result in an untimely end  They can just about tolerate not looking at them cos they will feel my wrath, but if they were bitten i really dont think id be able to stop them
