lucas dog 2
Hi all I'm thinking of giving up the terriers for spaniel A couple of reasons first I'm nearly 50 and my best mate is now in his 60,s we've had some fun over the years but I am getting fed up of looking over my shoulder all the time We are now doing more game shooting and a dog that retrieves rather than a terrier that half eats any phesant it comes across May be a bonus I'm down to my last terrier (border) I had her from db at the holderness and to be honest I've not given her the work she deserves Has any body else given up the terriers ? And regretted it Cheers all Edited February 3, 2014 by lucas dog Quote Link to post

Grunter123 1,112
I am 46mate and tired to give up but I missed the buzz the frill the unknowing are the at home or not is it going to be a blank or the best day ever the sound of the dog bay or the thumping as your dog takes hold and the little dog at your side who will give his her life to please you and to do what they love . Good luck Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
I gave it up a few seasons ago after losing ground, its a sickener reading lads posts on days out. I sent my last terrier to a keeper mate & regretted it but I didnt have the work to justify keeping him. I have some land now due to some good mates I met can get more work if I'm willing to travel. Got 2 pups here now 10 months & they're bouncing, ones heading back to a mate but looking forward to starting mine this year. I'm doing more shooting these days but terrierwork can never be replaced by it.....theres no comparison Quote Link to post
lucas dog 2
Cheers mate In a ideal world I would love to but I am not one for leaving dogs in kennels and limited on time In the week Shoot every Saturday through the season driven phesant and the terrier is stuck on couples most of the day as there is a set in every piece of cover we beat and some nasty rock piles mate lost a dog last season Just thinking it would be more sensable to get a cocker Quote Link to post
legacy2013 52
I think it would be more sensible to get a gun dog, at the end of the day only u can decide, i gave up the whole bullgreyhound game lamping all quarry because of trouble that came with it i do miss it, but reminders that its nt really worth it for me anymore and i have other sports that i love and keeps me occupied, with gundogs as well they can be used all year round, u'l miss it but sense comes into everything 1 Quote Link to post
Accip74 7,112
I gave it up before the ban & done other things in life, more freedom to travel etc, then got into falconry, got lots of new land which would of been great for terrier work, but the way things had become in Britain there seemed little point in going down that road again.........but always missed the buzz & I still got out occasionally with mates, but it's not same when it's not your dog below.......... But...,now I'm on the continent & things aren't fu*ked here yet, so gonna give it another go, hopefully get a pup next year, no rush.......but can't wait! :-) Good luck with your choice. fat man 4,741
No offence to you but if a pheasant in good nick is more important than your terrier then your heart is not really in it anyway.I am over 50,shoot every saturday of the season and quite a few evenings at the ducks aswell but would not miss a sundays diging with the terriers unless for some important reason. Some years back all my terriers were stolen, workers, even a litter of 6 week old pups, left me with nothing but i came back from that because i love the terrier game, dont get me wrong, also like my shooting but terriers has always and will always come 1st. 8 Quote Link to post
Stud dog 632
The only opinion that counts is your's if you think it's time to move on then it probably is just hope you get as much enjoyment out the gun dog as you did with the terriers all the best for the future [BANNED TEXT] ever you decide 1 Quote Link to post
shovel leaner 7,650
I gave up terriers and lurchers in the early 90s , got into game shooting , spaniels , and never looked back . Started keepering in 2007 and all of a sudden i had a lot of guys with terriers wanting to be my best mate . Went out with them and realised what i was missing . What im saying is , if you throw yourself into game shooting , you may not miss terriers . But to me there is no substitute for the respect you have for a good terrier . The rumble under your feet , and the sound of a steady bay ! Good luck in whatever you do , but if you go into spaniels dont go half hearted , spend some money and get a good un . They are a joy to work with ! Quote Link to post
Grinder 102
Keep both... I beat for a few estates, it gets the foot in the door for terrier work ... Or if it's the digging that's getting to your mate in his 60s take on a youngster or invite some mates out to do the spade work and fetching and carrying... My spaniel had opened a lot of doors before I started rearing and delivering pheasants for a mate.. And while your beating you will be amazed at the places you find . Quote Link to post

STRANGER 948
Agree with foxdropper. Too many people hang on for dear life once they have lost interest. Quote Link to post
lucas dog 2
Don't get me wrong I am still keeping the terrier I have I'm out Saturday with my mate He has been working terriers for over 40 years I have been goining out with him for over 25 years and I still learn something every time we go out ( he has been there done it got the tshirt) He has built up thousands of acres of permission And he also is down to his last terrier The thing is it just does not seem the same anymore I think the buzz has gone I'm just as happy with a quick bolt than a dig I just think it's time for a change and was thinking how many have packed up ? Then missed it so Mutch they have gone back ? Quote Link to post
