Popular Post gnasher16 30,418
Just like to say a very big thankyou to Taz 2010 who seems a very sincere sort of chap and definately a man of his word......I had been looking for a pair of Goldfinches for a while but couldnt seem to find any of any quality down here until Taz offered me a pair..........yesterday a lad who does a bit of work for me went to pick them up i gave him an envelope with a couple of hundred quid as i knew the value of the birds but Taz refused to take a penny !...... not only that he gave me an extra hen on top of the pair.......when the lad got back i said why wasnt you more forecful with the money he said " what was i supposed to do get him in a headlock " .... I was around the bulldog game for many years and had dealings with different folk from all over.....it was a cut throat game where most people were not even willing to share knowledge let alone share stock !!......Yet in this bird game a man i didnt know other than a few phone conversations is willing to not only give some of his birds for free but perhaps more importantly be willing to share a wealth of knowledge gained over years.......must admit im not often stuck for words but Taz if your reading this....in the most sincere way im extremely grateful to you. Another lovely thing about a gesture like this is how it can bring other newcomers into the hobby.....the lad who picked the birds up for me moved into a new place last month that has an old unused aviary in the garden,he doesnt know the first thing about birds but ive been on at him to make use of the aviary rather than knock it down........now after the time Taz spent with him chatting the lad is now on at me to breed him some Goldfinches Taz if you are ever down this way and dont drop by i,ll be annoyed.... i dont forget a favour .........Thankyou again. Heres is the new threesome settling in.

gnasher16 30,418
Definately mate im over the moon with them the mrs thinks ive lost the plot as ive been stood out for hours today just studying them ..........Im an all or nothing sort of person when i commit to something i dont cut corners so these birds will get the best of everything and hopefully that will give them every chance of producing some youngsters......i feel very fortunate in that i have access to good knowledgable folk like Taz and yourself for advice and im a quick learner.......must admit ive lost interest in the Goldfinch book id much rather watch and ask questions than just read from a book......and yes hopefully i,ll have a few nice pics to be posting in the future.....if they keep still long enough !!......Dont hang about do they....darting around all over the place not like the Canaries they just sit there with a smile on their face when i get the camera out
fireman 10,993
Well i'm chuffed for you and there'll soon get used to their new surroundings and will settle down a bit for you, they will dash a bit till they get used to the water/feed routine of you entering the aviary but settle down they will as Taz i'm sure has spent many an hour with them .The book you will use as referance many a time and it is good to be able to just check with them, but like you say sitting, watching and learning from it is what it is all about for me as well and i'm well looking forward to some of your posts this year as i'm sure are others. The very best of luck with them Gnasher

Outlaw Pete 2,224
I dont think it will be long before i build another aviary i really wish id built this one bigger ..... le Gnash; I reckon you could probably find the space there for a run of flights or so? This is an issue I'd like to (Pointlessly, in my case!) see kicked off and chewed over here, some time; One, massive, aviary Vs. a run of yard wide flights?
