Jon Evans 14
So I just got permission to go shoot at my local golf club were I happen to also be a member. Seemed to be quite up there one the first night, arrived at 8 PM and spent 10 minutes or so getting my air rifle all set up and fitting my Tactical Red Lamp to my scope. Met with the owner who was delighted he had someone to take care of the rabbits and other pests that were destroying the fences and greens. So i asked for some intell on what holes seem to have issues and was told that hole 17, witch the green is elevated above the fairway had seen rabbits borrowing underneath the green and was there anything i could do while not shooting. I had suggested setting up some snares on the borrow to catch them coming in and and out but it would seem with players being up the it was a health and safety matter so i said I would concentrate my efforts up on hole 17. NIGHT 1: Walked up hole 1 and zeroed the rifle at the top of the hole before crossing the road on to hole 5 witch lies just above hole 17. Set up in a wood line over looking the green and waited for a good 30 minutes and saw nothing moving about and gave up and carried on walking down the course. Got down onto hole 17 and started to back track up to hole 16 when i happened to see a quick glimpse of 2 red eyes shining back at me from one of the wooded ares. I got up about 20 yards of the tree line and noticed there was a woodcock sat up in the tree with a perfect shot. So i took aim and applied first pressure on the trigger and was about to squeeze my first shot off when a car came up the road shone its lights straight across the course and lit me up like a Christmas tree and blinded me, of course the shot totally missed and the woodcock took flight. So quietly cursing to myself about the stupid car i carried onto down to hole 16 and then started to make my way back down the left side of hole 17 on my way back to the club house for a pint before home. Lamping the rough to my left and saw my first rabbit of the night. Now being that its about 300m on top of a hill the course was waterlogged to hell and back and my footsteps seemed to be loud no matter what i tried to do. The rabbit kept moving away from me and was staying at least 50 yrds if not more from me. I started to get close to him thinking here we go I will have him now when he just decided enough was enough and bolted down under the fence and into the farm below (No permission to follow him). So that was night 1, a total waste of time and effort NIGHT 2: Thought I better get back up there Friday to make sure i got some time shooting before this bad weather hits us over the next week. So grabbed the air rifle chucked it in the case and started to make my way up the hill (almost killed me alone, Damn its steep) and arrived on the course for about 9 pm. Went into the club house and signed in to say I was on the course and set my rifle up and headed up the first to zero my rifle (Since last time, the owner had put up a wooden board up behind the golf cart shed for me to have somewhere with a backstop to shoot and zero. The wind was starting to pick up witch wasn't suppose to start till about 12 am, loaded the rifle and took my first 2 zeroing shots witch seemed to be bang on target, need a bit of left for the wind up there but other than that all was good. So i chucked my gun case in the shed for when i got back down to the club house and started to make my way to holes 5 and 17. As i reached the road to cross over the weather decided it was gonna stop me there, winds started to really pic up and the rain started to pelt down, so I decided the only thing I'm gonna get is a cold and gave up for the night again. So It would seem I have had 2 nights so far with very unlucky results, will be popping up tonight as the wind has died down and theirs no rain till tomorrow and should have good cloud cover tonight to. Will reedit the post with night 3 and pictures of any thing i get. Just need my luck to change! Quote Link to post
