beast 1,884
yeah all m y dogs retrieve shot game, in cover, water etc. track wounded deer, etc i think the role of the lurcher is so much more than just running down game, and performing all these different jobs means i can give them much more work than if we were just rabbiting. never had a problem with mine other than my own mistakes with training, but some lurcher crosses are not natural retrirvers and it can be a struggle to train this with them at times 1 Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I was talking to someone else about this and it does seem lurchers can make all round country dogs. Also mentioned the odd collie and Alsastian to. It is impressive what can be achieved. I've more or less made my mind up to get a collie lurcher. Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
I use Tess for pigeon shooting, beating, rough shooting and also when out with the rifles. She's got a decent retrieve but will sometimes try to 'run in' whilst shooting. (my fault not hers). Not so bad when shotgun shooting but when your out shooting foxes and she won't stay still in the truck it can make it a bit harder to hold your aim steady!! She just gets a bit 'hot footed' waiting for the retrieve! I've tried using her to track a shot deer before that had got into a large wood but as I haven't trained her to blood trail, it didn't work (again, lack of training on my part not lack of ability on her). As socks said earlier, I expect my dogs to do a bit of everything. I know their not Gundogs and will never have the abilities of the specialist breeds but for 90% of the time, you won't need your dog doing 500yd retrieve's, across water and unsighted! virtually everything you shoot is easily found (for a dog!).
