Getting Dogs In Shape.

Recommended Posts

I do a lot of bike work as i don't get to do a lot of 'proper' work, I used to borrow a friend's bike now i've bought one it makes it easier to maintain fitness, I think you need the free running also i.e. with other dogs or better still out chasing stuff. I had a great ball solid rubber about 2lb in weight and i could launch it down the beach on wet sand and let it run for about 200yrds then slip the dawg, until he got pissed off with it and carried it off into the sea , bugger. Two miles on a lead isn't going to be more than a toilet walk for most lurchers , different if there's a bit of free running but otherwise i say ineffective unless rehab for injury. Balls, sticks, steep banks to throw them down, and as has been said a good days work will see your dog worn out , feed and rest him well and there's a fitter dog at the end of it. Joe

Joe while i agree with you in some parts its always best to start slowly, muscles that have not been worked pull and strain easy when put under too much strain. the two week lead and road work is just a gentle warm up and to harden the feet and just strenghten the tendons, i have just got the dog so we are going through the bonding stage and i need to know he can be trusted so far so good, but spending time in close quarters is helping the bonding too win win! i cant wait to try him but he must be right! if i go to the gym after months off and work out hard i am sore for days!!!
