Best Rimfire

Recommended Posts

.17 WSM if it becomes available in the UK this year as it both out ranges HMR and isn't affected by wind. It's better than .22 hornet in that regard.

If not, I think your only option is .22LR or .22 Mag. if you want to stick to rimfire but your range is restricted.

If you're prepared to go centre fire then try .22 Hornet for "long range vermin" for good reason. I'd also play the safety card for long range shots citing windrift for HMR as the good reason table only allows Hornet for vermin under special circumstances.

With just Rabbits in mind then I would be edging towards a .22LR as the bullet is twice the weight of a HMR and will have better wind bucking abilities.

Sporting Shooter, are you sure about that, I'm sure I heard the .22lr was more affected by the .17 HMR?

Quite sure,

The HMR is renown for being affected by the wind over certain distances.

I'm thinkin if putting a variation in for another rimfire but not sure what to get. I have .17hmr and .243 win but I want something for the windy nights on the bunnys. Any suggestions?

Yeah, stick with the HMR, despite what many may suggest it is generally better than a .22lr in the wind, certainly NO major advantage to head for .22lr because of windy conditions!

Compare a few for yourself!
