Belfasthunter 12
Has [NO TEXT TALK] ever known of lurchers with a good bit of collie in them say for example 1/2 or 3/4 collie greys to stalk down the prey instead of catching them... I know a fella and he told me its hard to get a good collie x without it wanting to herd up it's prey instead of catch it and in some cases demolish it lol I didn't believe it but it is sort of believable I wondered what peoples thoughts were on this? trenchfoot 4,243
I've had collie x's do that stalk on rabbits in the daytime, but in 25 years of having them, I've never seen one try and herd it's quarry. So my thoughts on the subject? Bollox 4 Quote Link to post

beast 1,884
a lot of collie crosses will try to stalk at times, but not all of them and not all the time. the only thing i have personally seen which might be described as herding was one bitch of a mates which would often go out wide behind its prey if it could and come in from the opposite side to the handler if you get my drift 2 Quote Link to post

In my mind, that not herding, it's brains! Yes, it's how a collie cuts off a run when driving a flock, but in a collie lurcher, it's how they pick up quarry without spooking the crap out of it 1 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Yer I've seen them display traits which could probably linked to a herding instinct. But then herding instinct is just refined hunting instinct anyway. . . so if it catches the bunnys. . . . . who cares...... 3 Quote Link to post
foresterj 1,096
Never thought of that, would be marvellous, field full of rabbits and the dog makes it's outrun then gathers and drives them back to you, could be onto something, makes more sense than going backwards and forwards for one at a time, do the hundred in 2 or 3 runs 1 Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,694
Don't forget the legendary Fenton ,he herded all those deer up,anyone with that dog and a cattle truck would make a fortune in venison. 1 Quote Link to post
